Alright, so I had to go do a site repair today for work and there is this huge abandoned (microwave, I think) dish on the site, it points south. Until I did a lot of research today I had no idea what it was used for. The tower on site has an USAF tag on it and there is an open manhole cover that goes down about 6 feet then opens up in to something that is full of water. There is a huge ass feed-line for the dish goes into the ground and disappears. This site is in northern IL. So before we rented a spot on the tower and VHF'd it up it was an "United States Air Force (USAF) Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line Training Station", that worked with a site in different site in Streator, IL. Sorry about the shitty photos and typing, I did this from my phone. https://picasaweb....sRgCL-o37ySheyhlQE (edits: trailing to make this less shitty)

Very cool Nothing left of the DEW line station here on VAncouver Island. Nor anything left of the Diefenbunker, nor the Diefenbunker back up radio bunker near me, although all still owned by DND.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! | |
Here are my photos of the Streater DEW Line facility. By the way, this stuff was contractor-owned & operated. https://secure.fli...72157625672683264/ /-/oolie
