Not only that, all you need is a UART I once tried to actually do a piece for a client using XPort. Expensive and the code grew 20% just for the configuration of it. Modems are definately cheaper and more reliable.

The Burk / Gentner broadcast transmitter remote systems require a USR modem on each end for remote telemetry and control. Amazingly it can't just be ANY modem, they're a bit picky!! I use one for the transmitters at the college radio station I'm engineer for.
