Automated License Plate Reader

Anyone heard of this?

The ALPR (Automated License Plate Reader) system takes photographs of license plates and compares them to a daily-downloaded database, which maintains a record of license plates for stolen vehicles, DOJ wanted/stop-on-site vehicles, and vehicles with excessive parking citations.
ALPR is also equipped with FLIR technology and functions at night.

The photos of the license plates and locations of where the plates were captured are maintained in the database, and are useful when locating suspect vehicles. Need to know where a suspect vehicle frequents?
Check the ALPR database and see where the hits took place!
You might get lucky and get several pics of the suspect vehicle being parked in the same area on different dates!

I have.

The software is used in conjunction with license plate cameras on stoplights in some states and cities.

What really scares me is if this is hooked up to satellite imaging systems, which it probably already is.

We have it in NJ. They drive up a street and let it fly. If your registration or inspection is up, expect a ticket in the mail or under your windshield wiper!

Pictures added at bottom. Basically if you have a Suzuki (not sure about other makes) just take 2 zipties and ziptie your license plate to the front piece of the passenger foot bracket's. You will probably have to bend the top corners of your plate just a bit also. It makes it visible enough to be legal but it is literally impossible to see from behind unless somebodys bumper is right on your back wheel or they come up beside you. And no the zip ties arent even noticeable unless you are really looking at it. But the benefits far outweigh the aesthetic shortcomming's.

Ive gotten pulled over by a cop in a black undercover charger 3 times because of it but I never get a ticket and nobody else ever tries to pull me over. I think he just enjoys talking to me. Plus the whole mentality that "You may be able to outrun the crown vic but you cant outrun Motorola" That is true. Unless they cant catch your license plate ;) If your ever in Henrico watch out because ive seen a cop there try to ram a bike after he weaved inbetween the 3 other cars that were apparently blocking the road.

The secondary benefit of this mod is that you can reach back and flip your plate up and it will "lock" into the 2nd part of the bracket making it completely hidden in case you are planning on disappearing or doing something that might not make your mom proud.

This is all hypothetical of course ;)

If anybody feels this would be better off being moved to the motorcycle private forum let me know and I will start a how-to thread there instead.

My 2nd Cousin sets up LPR systems for a living. He sold a few units a few years back to actually CBSA and now for some toll road in Vietnam.

The automation feature with CBSA is interesting; its a two point camera setup that first trys to read from the front plate then if it fails for some reason will read from the rear plate. Once the plate is read, the customs offcier must confirm the plate is right before its run aganist NMVTIS.

Called ANPR (Automatic number plate recognition) and has been deployed across most of the eastern side of Australia for about 2 years. Recently they've ramped it up big time in Queensland to be on every major motorway. Most people aren't aware of it as generally it's not known by Joe average that it's more than just truck monitoring. Back in the day it used to only run on front end plates but in QLD it's now front and back on approach and after the overhead booms.

Fun times to be had by all.

EZPass uses that regularly here in NJ. It's a pain in the ass though because I'll get a letter in the mail every other week saying that I skipped the toll even though I have the device on my windshield at ALL TIMES. On top of that, I always make sure the screen says, "toll paid" before I move on. And! I have it set on autopay so why cant they just take the fucking dollar out of my account? Why the fuck do they keep bothering me??

Actually, the NJ Turnpike just photographs you as you go through the toll. Someone has to physically pull it up to look at your plate and and all that. Same as NY Thruway.

I have seen this already in use... somewhere. I cant recall where, but it was a "bwuhhhhh????" moment.

When will local PD's start to incorporate ALPR tech. into existing camera systems? If you put ALPR into the red light and speed cameras we have in MD... you could have a log of someone's entire journey. You really don't need the giant cameras they use for dedicated ALPR trucks, Britain does it with their existing system

But of course none of this matters... I give it less than ten years before every car is required to have a GPS device on it. Speed, location, etc. The insurance companies have already put out the technology, it's just a matter of them lobbying it in. Mileage taxes too based on the data.

Also, what is the deal with RFID receivers that hang out over the highway (on their own pole no less). Truck tracking? I have seen them on I-84 in Connecticut but can't find a picture
