Pwning High Security

I just got back from defcon where Mark Tobias and Tobias Bluzmanis presented their current status with the new hybrid mechanical/electronic locks by Medeco, and Assa among others. The synopsis of what they said was that after doing a good deal of research they were able to completely destroy the security of all of the locks using very simple tools and methods. These are the same guys that demonstrated bumping on Medecos by a 12 year old girl a couple years earlier.

What most of their presentation focused on was how there were weaknesses present in each level of security which could all be bypassed far more simply than they should be. Once bypassed, the locks were susceptible to standard attacks. The best part of the presentation was when the speakers mentioned how some of the lock companies threatened to sue them if they presented their findings, which caused the whole room to laugh and break out in applause. I definitely recommend looking up their video on Wired and their papers if you like high security hacking.
