I've been looking for a nice bright light for draining photography so I bought UltraFire U4-MCU Cree Q5-WC 3-Mode 230-Lumen LED Versatile Flashlight (CR123A/18650/18500/AAA) from dealextreme. At $22.76 for 230 lumens I have to admit I wasn't expecting THAT much but WOW am I impressed. Great build quality. Flexible battery choices (I'm still sticking with AA and AAA batteries). Highly recommended. My wife didn't seem all that impressed so I thought I'd look for support here.

The link didn't work for me!
when you are here, you wish you were there. but once you're there, it soon becomes a here, and you again wish to be there instead of here... we will never be completely satisfied. |

Fixed that for you: UltraFire U4-MCU Cree Q5-WC 3-Mode 230-Lumen LED Versatile Flashlight (CR123A/18650/18500/AAA)

230 lumens...lotta power! Rob...does this light have any focus or zoom functionality at all?

thanks digital_me. imbroglio, no, there's no focus at all and it's one mode. i took it outside tonight and even though the neighbourhood is fairly well lit but streetlights this thing really lit up the houses. i could take a pic of the beam tomorrow if you'd like?

Only one mode? Because the page says three... Seriously considering but if it's only one mode...

Mine is only one mode. Hey yeah, I thought it was three... Unless I'm doing something wrong?

That would be cool, but I don't wanna put you to any trouble. I'm just trying to get an idea of the beam size at any given distance.

Well if I shine it across the street (I live on a court) I light up my neighbour's two car garage. I don't think he likes when I do that. I must disclose that I've managed to break one of the o-rings fiddling around to see if it focuses! Easily replaced but you should know...

Interesting...you mention though that the unit you have is single mode; the description on DealExtreme indicates though that it has three modes; "Lo - Fast Strobe - Hi". So that's actually not the case, eh?

I'm trying to figure out a way of telling you that it is three mode without making myself look stupid but I'm stymied. Yes, it is three mode. You tap the clicky to change modes as opposed to clicking through the modes. Who knew? IT'S MY FIRST MULTI MODE LIGHT! lol

Awesome! Once I've figured out a backpack to buy (I'm somewhat picky, I've found) I'll be looking for a good AA/AAA light as a tertiary draining torch. Sounds like a great one for the purpose I'm trying to stick to AA/AAA as well, since I have chargers and a few batteries for those two types, and I've seen them around locally much more frequently than the fancy type. [edit: made a little clearer]
