mtx8000 a dud?

I just received an mtx8000 b3 model from a friend of mine who got it in a lot of stuff he bid on. The battery is dead but i rigged up some power to it, and here's the problem.
The green light on the top flashes when I power it up, but if I put it on any other channel then 1 The radio makes a tone. It also makes the same tone if i hit the; ptt button, the emergency button, or the top green or bottom black buttons on the side. If I hit the middle black button on the side I get a higher pitched sounding tone. Does all that mean that the radio is a dud? or is it just programmed that way? could anyone shed a bit of light on this for me?

many thanks

Short answer, the radio needs to be programmed... sounds like who ever decommissioned it cleared out all but 1 channel.

I'll give you $5 for it...

hah, yea I thought as much... hrmmm am I right in thinking theres no way to clone two b3's without mtsx right? cause finding computers old enough to handle it and the radios seem far in between...

Eh, I have an old laptop with Win95. It does well for all my programming software. Just find an old computer with Win95 or 98, and you should be fine...

I regularly use a P4 to program MTSX radios just fine.

However you *must* use real DOS - "Windows DOS" isn't going to do the trick.

And yes, it just needs to be programmed, it is very common for a radio to be stripped of its programming before being sold.

ah so would my athlon 64 do the trick you think? Also to address the DOS, would a windows 98 boot disk from bootdisk.com cover that? (sorry to turn this into a help me program my mtx thread)

Ok I got MTSX up and running... however I am looking for something interesting to listen to on the radio. Am I right in thinking all I would need to do would be simply swap the codeplug on my radio, with one from a differently programmed mtx8000? or if I had physical access to the radio, simply clone the codeplug from one radio to another?
