Drunken Master

The best picking I have done has always been while on a good buzz. I can pick locks normally, but every once in a while when I have been drinking I become rain man with a pick. I suppose this could be that a simpler frame of mind that is more adept at simple mechanical activities. Is this true for anyone else?

I have yet to try this. What sort of locks do you pick while drunk?

I get better at driving.

No.

I can twirl my butterfly knife at the top of my form though... I think maybe because its all actions that have been trained into my hands... Next time I'm drinking I'm going to try this and report back.

All kinds: american, master, and several other forms of padlocks. Russwin, Best, and Falcon cores as well.

It does not work every time, but occasionally the effect of alcohol gets me to pick all locks in under a minute. I have had nights where I have done this sober, but when it happens from alcohol the effects are more consistent.

I hate sfics.... do you use a tension wrench with teeth on the bottom, or just go till you get lucky, or is there some new trick?

Sadly I do not get better at picking when I drink.

SFICs are always a challenge for me too. I usually just do it until I get lucky, having not found a way to machine or buy the tension tools with the teeth. Do you know of any?

I don't use anything special, just regular tension wrenches. I find that sfics can only be picked with rakes, since I do not think I have ever successfully picked one with a feeler. Basically I bought some sfics off of ebay and continuously practiced until I could pick them.

A funny thing I realized recently, a long time ago I read about mushroom pins being used in Best locks. I was currently letting myself into buildings on my college campus frequently, and kept having problems where I thought I was getting caught on the mushroom pins. The lock would turn just a little and then would not move, I thought it was some king of pickers trap. Now I realized that I was picking the control key and the lock would have slid out if I pulled on it.

If you had it turning maybe 1/8th the way, then yeah... if it was much less, well then you were picking some to the control key and some to the regular key, which is what happens to me 95% of the time.

And on topic: I tried drunken-picking over the weekend... and it wasn't pretty. I could get easy locks just barely slower than normal, and harder locks not at all. And ADD kicked in much earlier than normal.

It could have been getting stuck most of the time, I know that some of them were control keys because I picked the control key on an sfic a few weeks ago and I recognized the feeling from times before. Back then I did not know much about how the lock worked so it never crossed my mind.

When I drunk pick I am not really thinking about what I'm doing and am working mostly on touch. I have that problem where when I start thinking about an automatic function I mess it up. When I jump rope I can go for a while but will mess up every time I think about my jump patterns, so the booze might be minimizing that problem.
