First shots from my first film camera. (35mm)

So as some of you know, I recently bought my first film camera. I a great Canon A2 and a Coolscan IV last month.

I'm really wishing I'd gotten into film sooner. I think about the only thing I'll be using the digital for now is really long exposure work and times when I need to take a buttload of shots.

Here's some of my favorites from my first few rolls. They're shot on a combination of Superia 200, 160NC, 160VC, and 400VC using either my 17-40 F4 or 24-70 F2.8.

Keep an open mind and try everything you can. Cross processing E6 in C-41 can be allot of fun. Learn to develop your own film (if only B&W), you can easily attain equal or better results than most pro labs at a fraction of the cost. Consider buying a cheep medium format TLR, they can be had for under $100. Above all have fun!

Great shots by the way numbers 4 and 9 would be me favorites.

I've recently begun shooting C-41, while developing and printing it in the darkroom and my photography has improved immensely because of it. When printing color, you have no sharpness, saturation, or contrast control (saturation and contrast could be changed by switching papers, but that can be quite expensive). I've always known the importance of exposure and lighting contrast and temperature, but until shooting color I never gave it much thought, as black and white film and paper is so forgiving. If you get the chance to print your own (if you can do black and white and know a bit of color theory it's quite easy), you should definitely give it a shot. Even if not, you should at least once experience getting your photos printed old-school at an optical lab (none of the Fuji Frontier "develop-scan-adjust-print-develop" nonsense.

That said, the Kodak Portra series scans beautifully. I haven't had any time with any of the Nikon scanners, but the Coolscan IV is comparable to my Konica/Minolta and let me tell you, the difference in quality between a consumer level scanner such as ours, and the Hasselblad/Imacon FlexTight scanners I use at school is like the difference between a low end flatbed and our personal film scanners. Find a lab that uses them, or somebody with access to one, and use it for your best images. I've made super clear and crisp 44x66 inch prints from a 645 negative using the Imacon and an Epson 9800.

Good luck!

edit: I forgot to add - there are wet-mount filmholder kits available for many of the consumer level film scanners that immensely improve the quality of your scan.

The good thing about film is also that you have to REALLY think about your shots... you quickly decide whats worth shooting and what isnt worth shooting....
