Unexpected Guest

After getting home last night at 10pm, I wasnt in any mood to go get my mail. After spending 2 days in 100 degree temps, being sunburnt, & bruised from being thrown off my seadoo, all I wanted to do was go to bed. However, after about 4 hours of sleep I was wide awake again--sore, but awake. Having not better to do, I decided to get my mail. My mailbox is right off the end of my covered porch next to a gated side yard. The almost still-full moon made everything fairly bright outside so I didnt need the porch light on. It is a locked wall-mounted mailbox & as I was getting my mail, there was a rustling noise in the gated side yard. At first I thought it was the neighbors fluffy black cat who sometimes likes to come goof-around in the grape vines that are growing along the fence. I didnt pay much attention to it as it came closer to me. I was looking through my mail to see if there was anything interesting.

The gate right next to the front of the house doesnt close all the way since it is covered with grape vines. I felt something soft rub against my ankles & wind itself around my legs in a figure eight. Thinking it was the neighbors cat, I bent down to pet it. Absently I gave the animal a scratch on its head. When it didnt give its normal purr, I looked down & saw that this 'cat' had 2 white stripes down running the length of its body. It had no odor to it. Ni smelly 'skunk' smell. Suppressing any loud noises or sudden movements, I slowly stood up & backed away. The skunk just looked at me & then turned around & sauntered back to into the side yard--rustling through the grape leaves. As soon as I saw it turn away & move out of my sight I immediately went back into my house. Giving thanks to whomever/whatever was watching over me & being grateful that I didnt startle the 'wilderness kitty' in any way, shape or form. The odd thing was that when I actually left for work this morning (4:30) there was the skunk waiting at the back gate. I opened it for the skunk but it just stood there watching me. My car was really close so I backed over it & got in. As my headlights washed over the gate as I was leaving, it was still there.

Ok, I dont live in the country nor do I live in the urbanized city--I live in a normal neighborhood with regular houses & such. I have had raccoons visit & have had a family of quail nest in the decorative grass...but never a skunk. The only thing I can think of why this 'wildlife' visits is due to the river being about 3 blocks away from me. I have never before petted a skunk & dont particularily want to again. I prefer just watching them...from a distance.
