Ok; Im used to stopping down the aperture depending on the distance to the subject. My new camera has EV comp for flash; what the hell do I do with it?
I was thinking highly reflective or white subjects would get flash EV - and very dark and non reflective subjects would get plus com. However, exposing for highlights leaves me confused.
Since it's available, what are you thoughts as to properly making uses of this tool?
I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.
What kind of camera? Mine has it, though not in full manual mode which I usually use. If shooting in auto, I'll take a shot at zero, and maybe adjust the EV up or down and take another one, depending on the results. Play with it.
Yet another unoriginal generic UE website. GODDAM!

FUji S5100; Has the standard EV compensation, but this is "flash EV comp" which I understand isn't offered all that much.

It's not something you find on cheapo cameras, but it's nothing amazing. Basically what it does is change the flash output metering. If your camera would normally provide X amount of flash to illuminate a wall 4 feet away from the lens (it calculates all this on the fly and adjusts while the picture is being taken), then you could tell it beforehand that you want it to calculate that amount but actually provide plus or minus a few stops of flash power when the picture is taken.
Like a fiend with his dope / a drunkard his wine / a man will have lust for the lure of the mine "If you are not part of the solution, you are not dissolved in the solvent."
Mostly I use it when my camera's TTL flash metering fucks up and under/overexposes. When I'm shooting flash I generally walk around with +1 flash comp dialed in to get images that are properly exposed. It can also be useful if you want to force the flash range to be higher despite blowing out stuff that's close to the camera.
