I checked out that cave and camp that's been in the media lately. Not Bear Mountain, this one is threatened by a highway project. The cave doesn't look like much, but they can be deceptive. The guy at the camp said there are some very narrow passages that go down, from inside the main entrance area. Tight and plugged though. He is thinner than me, and said he couldn't get into them.

I went and visited them a couple days after they made camp in the tree.. Very nice people! They fed me peanut butter cookies They have been up there for several weeks now. I made my way to the cave & crawled my way to the end. Not really deep but still pretty cool & worth a visit. Be prepared to crawl on your belly alot

The passages that go "down" you are talking about, are you referring to another way other than where the main passway leaves the inital "cavity" with all the roots hanging?

Im waiting on a new power supply for my imac, Ill post my pics when I get it up & running in a couple days..

Overheard on Douglas and Discovery last night, 10:15 PM, as mentioned by one street kid to another: "...there's another [not heard] going on under Fisgard, and that fat chink with the sick gold watch is in for forty grand..."

Curious.

I just wanted to find it last night, didn't go in. I was hoping for something bigger, then to go back with proper gear. The guy there had lit a fire in it earlier, so it was kind of stinky. And likely too tight for me.

I think he might have lit a fire under a bowl as well, Nice fellow, but kind of vague and stuff, said he was new on the scene.

He said there are several small downward tunnels from that top "initial cavity" (It sounds like you found and explored one of them, cool) How far did it go? Also, I don't know how accurate his description was, he said he hadn't gone in further than the initial cavity. Would be good to see your photos.

I meant to thank you sooner for that ¿¿¿

It wasn't any of the GCG crew. But we know who did it.

Does the city of Victoria have publicly viewable infrastructure maps? I know Saanich has basic maps available, and detailed ones if you don't mind some red tape.
if you got these maps and overlaid them onto each other, could you not look for paths that the infrastructure is avoiding, to narrow the search for tunnels?

The City of Victoria has many many resources, but sadly, many of these resources are not easily or readily on hand for the public. City Archives is not a friendly environment, as has been noted elsewhere in this thread, and efforts to access such information are generally rebuffed/denied.

Which is sad, and a little bewildering: a city's archives are there, for the most part, for public consumption; to provide the history of a place in photographs and records. Apparently, the attitude at City Archives is that the public does not have any right to follow paths of personal interest. My efforts to research this story through City Archives were met with disdain, icy detachment.

All that aside, it is entirely possible to correlate various records to show/demonstrate missing links/gaps in information. Speaking with people outside Official Archives has, for me, provided a wealth of information. City workers, the men and women who work at the end of a shovel (for example) have been very generous in sharing their exceptionally detailed knowledge of their work. It was, after all, the stories of now long-retired City Workers who provided descriptions of old tunnel systems around Fisgard and Harald St. and of the Union Club/Strathcona tunnel.

Of course, the most valued and trusted information comes from people who live on the streets of Victoria. When Archives says NO, I can find any number of people who will say YES, who then offer point-by-point details for specific locations that have, up to this point, led me into areas of this urban legend that were casually dismissed by City Archives.

In short, Victoria™ isn't helping. But that hasn't stopped me, or the dedicated team of The GCG, in this pursuit.

Yes mifft ,
their are also us here at this thread that just ,,"happen" upon locations
out for a walk and such , it is just a matter of the prosess of "elimination" ,
if clues are taken from this wealth of information here in this thread ,
and being aware of one's surroundings ,,The tunnels that are in existence under victoria can be found without the help of the city's archives ,,
It is just a matter of looking for the proper clues ,the landscape and the geology of an area, also hearsay is very helpful such as the homeless
and retired city workers too ,,
I would say yes you will narrow the search down as you are searching ,,

It's a shame they are so uncooperative. When I emailed some official at Saanich, asking for maps, he was more than happy to assist me, even when he found out I wanted the maps so I could safely go digging in a place that I shouldn't be digging.

Hey Gang

I hear Satan is back and leaving clues? I had to read a few pages to catch up.

Anyone here involved with this? (below)

"as you may know, there's a special event that takes place in Victoria on the second Friday of every month: the moonlight midnight mystery bike ride!

...and the next one is coming up on FRIDAY departing from centennial square at about 10:30 pm, a crew of bicycle-riding revelers make merry in the streets of our fair city. the ride can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours (leave when you've had enough), is composed of between 20 and 60 riders, features frequent stops and liberal consumption of beverages, and ventures far into the city's secret nooks and crannies that you'd never otherwise find. it's a good time, my friends. A lover and really good friend of mine organizes that... a blast, but not really UE oriented.

I was more curious about the "city's secret nooks and crannies that you'd never otherwise find." as mentioned in the Bike-o-thon.

Cal 250-418-8867 and ask for info about the rides. Like I said, not a whole lot of UE involved as far as I know. I also live in Calgary...

PS: Does one of you like stew?
