Any one have some gadgets they like to use for UE or even some real like situations?

I use my pocket PC as a GPS, mapping system, and for notes and audio recordings. I try not to take it anywhere that I think it might get damaged or wet, so it's not a regular part of my gear. I also use a police scanner frequently, with either a single earbud or a pair of headphones and a splitter to a music player (so I can listen to both at the same time).
I'm currently trying to buy an oxygen / explosive gas tester for exploring mines, there's a few around here that I know for a fact have bad air, and I don't want to use the old candle test if there's methane too.
I can't think of any other gadgets I've used, just a few that I thought about but never got around to setting up. I wanted to rig a motion sensor switch to a camcorder and hide it near a combination lock, but I later found a better way to get the combo. I've considered RC-car cameras, it looks like there's a new one out now with two-way audio and a movable camera, too bad it's $200

Well, the basic tools of the trade. High end flash light, multi-tool, knife, etc.
I have a very nice homemade manhole popper.
Occasionally I break out the police scanner or some 2 way radios, though not often.
I sometimes bring my extra digi-cam to keep an eye-out for infrared sensors.
Good rope/climbing gear has been very helpful.
Not sure what counts for gadgets, but my bag is usually relatively full.

I use my iPAQ with the gps attachment some times aswell, usuallly depends on where im going and the availablility of maps/ arieal shots.
as for the remote controled car/camera, they are easy to build. i just took my remote controled truck and mounted my wireless x10 to it. dosnt haev AMAZING range because its wireless but it works, idealy, i would have a tethered one do go through tight places, that may be a waste of time/dead end drain/sewer... why break my back? lol

Digital cameras usually pick up infrared light and translate it to visible spectrum so with an infrared light you would see a light in your viewscreen, but not with your eyes, thus "detecting" it.

that is sweet, just tried it out, even from 25 feet, the remote IR is bright, i cant wait to try this out in the feild

i just bought a few IR leds from radio shack, gonna play aroudn with them tonite, and i might buy an ir laser.

Hmm. maybe thats' a use for those IR beacons I got, either digi-cam illuminators or security cam blinders :p

Maybe, I have about 5 or 6 and haven't found a use for them yet. I probably want to save some in case I ever get night vision goggles and want to do some covert ops shit or something. They retail for about $25-$30 each but if you have something you want to trade for a couple (extra memory cards, other gadgets, etc) let me know.

Supposedly they're visible through clothing, although my digital camera can't see it very brightly. They definitely shows up on nightshot cameras.

The idea has been sugested, though I'm not sure if anyone has actually tried it. There has been video of explorers, but I don't think it's ever other explorers on the other end.

I would love an IR illuminator as I like to shoot IR pix. Would make it easier to get the shots, be useful for interior shots... hmm...

Do they make compactflash slot GPS addons? I have a HP pocket PC and was debating whether or not to go and search for one.
I use mine to record audio notes. Too risky to take it everywhere because I don't want my baby damaged

Yeah, check eBay for the CF GPS's. I paid $100USD for one with an external antenna, PCMCIA adapter, and some extras, but I think they're down around $50 now.
I got that O2 sensor, but it's a bit flakey. I think the Canary (or a mouse, etc) would work better. I also talked to a geologist about testing for bad air, he said unless it's a coal mine you're probably safe using the candle test. The main danger is just lack of oxygen from rust reactions in rails, tools, metal veins, etc. I don't know what gas byproduct replaces the oxygen, but it's not explosive.
