I consider myself to be a professional in this field, since as a civil engineer, I do a fair amount of surveying and map making. I use both ArcView GIS software, and Autodesk CAD software to create and view maps, both at work and at home. I have liked making maps and reading them. Even as a kid, maybe 13 years old, I would make maps of all of the places I explored. I saved them, and I still think they are pretty cool. Unfortunately, a lot of what was on them has since been replaced by developments.

I'm new to just about everything.
I've always liked maps though... In 8th grade we had rotation classes and I took architecture and GIS stuff. I'd like to get back into that in a functional UE sense.

I am a newbie to all this "google earth" kind of stuff. But I think what might qualify me here is that I have on many occasion spent hours just completely absorbed in city maps -- often of areas I know well, ha!
Anyway, this forum may at the very least provide some much needed therapy (whoo haaa) or it will simply be a case of zeee monster being released.

Didn't notice this thread before...
2nd year university geography student(almost 3rd year now) specializing in Urban Development; however, I am taking as many GIS courses as my program allows... basically I see GIS as the future of geography jobs; it will be hard to find geo jobs without some GIS use in the near future.

I've been obsessed with maps for about as long as I can remember. Geography was always my favourite class-I would get duplicates of the maps so that I could colour them in differently.
I love looking at Google Maps (and similar sorts of things) online, but nothing beats holding a real map in your hands. I'm also really interested in the history of map-making. I love old maps of young cities where the plots had been divided but nothing had been built on them yet. I like to imagine how it must have looked and what it was like to be there.
It's really neat to have super-detailed satellite maps that show everything, but there is something very charming about an old map made by a person who went out exploring, who then went back and depicted their surroundings in pen and ink in order to share that information with others.
And maps are just beautiful to look at too!

Hey, late to the party it seems, but I've been fascinated with reading and creating maps since I was a kid.
I've just recently started seriously using satellite and GIS to research for exploration purposes, though, and this board looks like a good place to be able to learn/contribute.
