I just found this board. Never thought to look in the private section before. I'll probably be resurrecting a few old threads.
1: SD80MAC, preferably in Conrail blue. I love the SD45-on-steroids look they have.
2: SD40-2. I hope these things outlast me. And I won't be surprised if some do. Back in May at Horseshoe Curve I caught a coal train with 3 on the front of the train and 4 more pushing on the rear. It doesn't get much better than that.
I'm mainly an EMD guy, but I only dislike newer GEs. Old Dash-7s and C32/C39-8s are cool in my book. Although for some reason, I really do like the GEVOs CSX has been taking delivery of.

I've noticed lately though, that CPR is starting to use SD40-2's in the roles of GP9's... like shortline work and switching. The AC4400's are moving in.

This isn't an isolated practice, sadly. Around here, I've seen NS using Dash-9's to perform yard switching, and a local railfan I know of once chased a CSX move where they used a pair of SD40-2s to wye a single boxcar: http://www.trainwe...s/RPOTD050512.html
It's a shame to see things like Geeps and SWs being displaced by larger power. I chalk it up to the mentality of all the bean-counters that run the railroads these days. They'd rather have a single type of locomotive that can do everything rather than a few classes suited to particular duties. That, and the only small locomotives being made these days are the Green Goat and GP20D...

I'd love to see where all those old locomotives are going. I know most are going to shortlines and scrappers, but CN & CP must have somewhere to store them. I know Ogden or Angus Yard in Calgary (sp=?) has a few old ones lying around.

here a lot of locos in montreal go to century esdc (they occupy part of the old GE plant) they scrapped 4 LRCs and a lot of MLW alcos recently

Royal Hudsons! CP RH's 2850 & 2860 in particular. Gad. If I could have one wish it would be to roll across Canada, pulled by one of these babies. Closely behind that is the claaaaaaasic FP7A in the Burgundy, Grey and Yellow CP scheme, and finally, even though it isn't a real loco, I love the New York Navy Yard switcher #51: http://www.trainsh...bin/page2?Rec=1910

the hudsons out there i read there are only 5 remaining that belonged to the CPR, 2 of which were "royal" one is in the canadian rail museum (2850) in st constant quebec, static display its boiler tubes are so badly corroded it would need a complete rebuild not just a restoration. the royal hudson (2860) that bc rail used to run is now in static display its boilers never were re certified also, there is a non streamlined hudson out in california that belonged to the cpr and the one in the science museum in ottawa. there is a happy ending, the most abused of the survivors 2816 crossed canada last summer, now it wasnt one of the streamlined royal hudsons but she is gorgeous, she was brought back from steamtown, and after being a boiler in cote st luc for years was brought back by BC rail for cp

you do that  last summer seeing the 2816 in full steam was incredible, it really was like a living breathing animal, tryly a beautiful sight

I am going to BC and I am stealing her! I have an old VHS of a pair of hudsons crossing canada. I think that 2816 was one of the ones in the video. That or 2817.

well 2816 is the only operable one in exhistance and it has only been functioning for 2 years

There are 3, yep, 3 of those little blue Vulcan switchers still in use on the Vancouver waterfront, at a grain terminal. Yes, the hudsons are nice, 2860 is at the Railway Heritage Park in Squamish BC, about an hour north of Vancouver. I believe the 2860 is slowly being restored to its former fire breathing beastness. (it may take years for the boiler to get certified).
By the way, I sure like the TPHX 2100,(thomas Payne holdings, formerly the reading 2100). I saw it in the BNSF New west yard, a few weeks ago, i'll get pic's soon. This thing is a massive 4-8-4 fire breathing dragon!

I believe the best locomotive ever was the J-3a (as seen on PRR's 20th century limited)
I have a thing for the streamline designs... other than that, maybe the F3 because it still had the sleek line

I like those CN electric Steeple Cabs that they ran from 1950 to 1995 on the electrified Montreal to Two Mountains line. CN had only 3 No.s 6725, 6526 and 6727. I also liked the UAC Turbotrain... what a neat train that was.

there was a UAC turbotrain sitting in the old canada car shops in ville st pierre for years. no kidding right next to the olympic stadium roof (it was stored there)

I wish I had seen it... As I only have memories of seeing it by the Dorval station in the early 80's... Too bad non of them exist today, from what I heard, CN donated one to the Delson museum but they refused it at the time as they said it was too american, yet CN then VIA used them much longer then Amtrak.

from what i heard it had to do with the museum in the early 80s being in very lean times, a lot of its collection that didnt fit in the barns was rotting outside and they just couldnt take on an entire train like that at the time

Actually, 2860 could be back in steam by the conclusion of 2006.
The West Coast Railway Association in Squamish became the caretakers after BC Rail shut down it steam program, and started a full boiler repair in 2004.
The most recent photos from March are of the beginning of the re-tube of the Boiler.

Much like the Heber Valley Railway's steam specials to the events in 2002 at the Salt Lake City games, my understanding is that 2860 will work along-side conventional diesel passenger trains to move people and athletes potentially from North Vancouver to Whistler during the 2010 winter games.
