Foggy, Post-Christmas Abandonment Tour Dead-Ends at a Shitbox Disaster

After the warmest Christmas on record here in southern Ontario, there has been a persistent, pea-soup fog that has blanketed most of the Niagara region for days. I went out this morning with intentions of doing a set of foggy exterior photos of regional abandonments, with a pairing up of a single interior shot at each location. The series was going well: I visited 6 spots that included an old newspaper printery, a few farms and some old houses. That made for the first 12 photos.....

Then, I hit this next spot in photograph 13 and the fog tour hit a brick wall as soon as I stepped through the door. This place was such a nightmare that I had to dedicate the rest of the morning exclusively to capturing the wet-rot filth. There was a pervasive, urine-like stench that greeted me in the kitchen and probably got worse from there on. But the respirator went on and didn't come off. Seldom have I encountered this level of roof decay in an inner-city house. At one point, I heard a loud bang and shuffling in a room down the hall and I called out, figuring there was a squatter in one of the bedrooms. It turned out that after three days of heavy rain, the ceiling was collapsing while I was in the house! With moldy laundry still inside the machine and a freezer with the most disgusting maggot infestation ever, this place was a putrescence dream, and I slid my way through every inch of it. I texted a local not long after leaving here and discovered that this place was occupied at the start of this past summer. What the heck caused the young woman and her kids to drop everything and leave so instantly? A life-threatening break-up? A drug bust? A poltergeist!?

I have to commend you for being able to hold the freezer door open long enough to take #19, I would probably have just immediately closed it, and promptly try to forget about it for the rest of my time there, what a nightmare. Nice photos, can't go wrong with foggy exteriors.

Anybody want a dried peach?

I appreciate the offer, but I think I'll have to pass it on to the next explorer!

Good god that's disgusting.

If they were renting/living in the summer, maybe the lack of roof structure is what drove them out so suddenly.

The rain has been so depressing, especially after buying myself a new snowmobile back in October.

Jesus that's up there with the most disgusting houses I've ever seen. I can smell it from here.

Shot #5 is particularly good, away from the mouldy hell hole.
