Premont, Texas is a small town in the Rio Grande Valley, about 70 miles southwest of Corpus Christi. Its population peaked in the 1970s with the oil boom, but as of 2023, the population is 2,427, and it’s only becoming more of a ghost town. On highway 281 running directly through town, an elementary school sits abandoned for 30 years and counting. Built in 1944 and closed in the early ‘70s due to asbestos contamination, it’s since been deemed too costly to tear down. In more recent news, a large fire was started in the school at around 3:30 AM on December 21, 2020. More than 50 firefighters from surrounding areas were called to help put it out.
I came across this spot on an Easter weekend trip to South Padre Island, and I’m so glad I did! I have yet to explore somewhere still SO full of stuff! It was also my first school exploration, so I can go ahead and check that off the urbex bucket list too VLOG of the exploration!: https://youtu.be/i...i=oHBvr2_CIgBvtjcL URBEX INSTA for more disposable photos!: http://instagram.com/LONELYSTARURBEX FLICKR if you’re not on insta!: https://www.flickr.../72177720313672673
