I'm currently researching about an old shutdown facility a few hours away.
How would someone normally find out if a place has active security or security cameras remotely? Is there also any other pieces of information I should research before going out?
I should also mention this place is in the middle of no where.

From my understanding, that's pretty much impossible, especially if it is rural. Your best bet would be to see if you can see any from earth street view and or tell if there is power to the building. If there isn't power chances are there are also no functional cameras and vice versa. The only other way I can think of is to find someone who has been there before or lives near it and have them give you what they know or even check it out for you.

Honestly sometimes it's just a chance you have to take, occasionally in situations like that the best way of finding out is just going there and taking a chance.

If you open the camera app on an older phone and look at the suspected area through that, infrared cameras will sometimes glow bright purple on your phone screen. This only works with older cell phones that lack modern IR autofilters on their cameras lenses.
As for infrared cameras themselves, most will have a distinct glowing red ring in the center of the camera lens. The problem is that if you can see it the camera has already seen you, so the best thing you can do is to cover your face (covid masks are great for this) when you suspect cameras might be in the area and to immediately leave if spotted by one.

Honestly it’s hard to tell, and normally you just have to take the risk. Sometimes there’s ways to tell (such as using an old phone model as mentioned before,) but even then it’s iffy. Also don’t let a sign saying “property under surveillance” scare you, as i’ve tended to notice that these signs will often be up in places with no cameras as a cheap way to scare off vandals. Only answer I can give is to fuck around and find out. Always have an exit plan, don't get cornered, and have fun. A good tip to see if a camera is on though is to point your phone camera at the lens of the camera, and at least for most newer security cams with IR sensors, you'll usually see a red dot beaming.

what razzyt was saying about IR unfortunately no longer works in modern phones. for example I have an iPhone so know a bit more on those than Android but iirc the latest iPhone that worked with that was the 7 for the back camera and 8 or 10 for the front camera. for my SE 3rd gen which is a modernized 8 the rear camera will not pick up my TV remote or IR flashlight, for the front camera it will pick up my TV remote but not IR flashlight.

Does the place have power?
If not then any cameras there would be what I consider a "trail" camera and something that would have to be physically visited to pull info from?
If there is power then the cameras could be sending life signal somewhere, but that would require a connection so maybe scan for WiFi networks in the area? If there is one named "dieurbexersdie_camera" then there might be a camera.
Just guessing, I am sure that technology probably has exceeded my feeble mind years ago. I have almost always been in and out of places pretty quick so I never worried about cameras thinking that by the time someone would get there I would already be gone.

Unfortunately trail cams are getting more intricate. While there are still plenty of battery-operated ones with SD cards to wipe, in recent years I've seen more solar-powered trail cams with wifi antennas that instantly broadcast whatever the camera sees directly to the owner's phone.
