House of a Thousand Bears

I initially discovered this house through a Facebook group in which somebody posted pictures of the nearby cemetery and this house was in the background. I looked up the cemetery and found that the house was (sort of) on the way to a NASCAR race I was attending. It was worth the detour for the architecture alone. The house was situated on a dead-end gravel road with farmland and the tiny cemetery to the east and a patch of woods to the west that secluded it from a small community of run-down houses and trailers.

After my visit, I searched the address on the county auditor site and found the property. The house was reportedly built in 1890 and judging by the satellite photos, it was abandoned somewhere in the 2009-2011 range when vehicles disappeared from near the house and the property became overgrown. I also found the names of the owners and their mailing address is in a town about 20 minutes away.

1. They certainly don't build houses like this anymore.

2. As I approached the front entrance where the door was completely missing, the first thing I saw was this toppled piano at the base of a tall staircase with no railing. This was also where I starting finding the stuffed bears, a handful of which were grouped in the foyer.

3. I entered the room to the right and found three more bears crouched under a set of vine-covered windows.

4. On the other side of the staircase was another living area with some broken furniture.

5. This little porch must have been nice.

6. I found this back room sort of odd. I wonder if it was a dining area.

7. The kitchen was the most decayed room on the first floor.

8. I climbed the stairs and found a hallway with a wooden floor and no railing protecting the staircase.

9. The upstairs bathroom was out of order.

10. The rear bedroom was absolutely covered in stuffed bears. You couldn't even see the floor.

11. The west bedroom was a match for the living room below it. It was absolutely full of broken furniture.

12. I don't usually get excited by wallpaper but I did enjoy the remaining scraps of it in the west bedroom.

13. The east bedroom was the emptiest but it did contain a nice old sewing machine.

Thanks for looking!

Very cool, it has an almost Alice in Wonderland vibe between the architecture, playing card wallpaper, and stuffed bears. Do you think the previous owner was a collector or something?

Must have been. This house is so out of the way that I can't imagine it's one of those things where people keep leaving them. My question is how does one store that many bears?

Possibly the sewing room was used to make/repair the bears. House looks to have a bit of Second Empire influence, at least the roof reminds me of that. Maybe they had plans for some kind of teddy bear museum or something.

Interesting find. Makes me think of a recent post of "scariest things in a bando." Definitely, a room filled to the brim with stuffed animals for me.
