Here's a small roadside find, an example of what's called a "country school." Slightly bigger than a one room school house, this one had nothing more than a tiny combination gymnasium/cafeteria and two classrooms. Presumably it was for local elementary school aged children in decades past and fell out of use when larger, newer schools and modern transportation made this one obsolete. Schools like this one functioned as both schools, community meeting halls, and even temporary churches in tiny rural communities that hadn't grown large enough yet to support the construction of more than one public building.

1.) The cafeteria and gymnasium, facing north.

2.) The cafeteria and gymnasium, facing south.

The first classroom.

The second classroom, built almost identical to the first.

Exterior view facing the front door.

That's a pretty cool find. It reminds me of an old schoolhouse not far from me but it isn't abandoned, seems like someone turned it into their home. The whole building is the size of a medium sized house. The one you found is much more modern, despite being old on its own. My best guess of the one near me was it was built in the mid-late 1800s, and since it's brick it still stands like any other old house.

Since it's in decent shape without vandalism, I was just curious how far away from the road is the building?

That last picture was taken from the road, to answer your question. It's road that is well off the highway and doesn't get much nonlocal traffic.

I was also curious about the shed in the back of the road photo but also in the window of another. Is the school near a house?
