When the covid pandemic closed the world down, Finland was placed in a lockdown. That included the borders of the region, which I lived in, being closed. You couldn't cross the border without a valid reason. I had none. After three weeks of sitting inside, I decided to take a trip to the Southernmost tip of Finland, as it was within limits. I had read about a nature trail which led there, and I was eager to take it.
Here we are on the gates of the trail. The harbour behind the sign seems a bit discouraging, but ok.
It sure looks nice. But you couldn't get to this point without seeing several warning signs. One forbade leaving the marked trail, as there could still be world war two era grenades around. The other one advised against picking berries or mushrooms, as the soil could still be contaminated because of industrial activity. Ok, seems a safe place for a hike.
Such a nice scenery. if there wasn't an ancient shipwreck blocking the view.
And here we have some war time barracks in their natural habitat. I really would have liked to have a better look, but the fence was solid.
Several of the buildings were about to collapse. Some had already done that.
I believe these to have been artillery stations. And what is that ship doing on my nature trail?
Finally, the Southernmost tip of Finland. I sat down, opened a bottle of wine and started daydreaming. After an hour or so I had the greatest idea of all time. I would buy myself a summer car and start touring national parks and abandoned houses during weekends and my summer holidays. I immediately left back home to search for a suitable vehicle. And noticed this.
This has to go down to the least natural nature trail I've ever seen. But it gave me a good idea. More photos and links to the longer version of this story: https://desertedfi...-trail-hanko-2020/
