Hello UER, my circle of friends and have been interested in urbex for a while now, and we've just now found a location to explore. So seasoned recreational trespassers, what wisdom would you impart upon us first timers? Feel free to share the story of your first!
Not sure if this helps, but the building is an old silo complex, haven't been there myself but I found a picture of it on Flickr

I suppose it really depends on the building. I always tell myself when I get a little nervous or scared to not think about it too much, a sort of "YOLO." Watch your step, especially if the building is multiple stories. I'm not exactly a pro, this is just what I've already learned from my experiences. (Watch out for bats too them will scare ya pretty good)

Be really careful about air quality. Asbestos is a pretty common hazard when exploring. It isn't super dangerous on its own, but if it is disturbed and becomes airborne, breathing in the dust will cause severe respiratory issues that won't show up until forty years down the line. Asbestos can most commonly be found in old bricks and insulation. Another thing you need to be aware of are dead animals. Decomposing organic matter (especially in water) in an enclosed space like a basement can create extremely dangerous gasses like hydrogen sulfide. If you start to smell rotten eggs, have trouble breathing or notice that your heart rate is abnormally high for no clear reason, leave the area immediately. Don't hang around because the effects of toxic gasses can get severe really quickly. High amounts of hydrogen sulfide can knock you out with just few seconds of exposure. Some gasses are odorless too, so you need to be aware of your breathing and heart rate. You can buy oxygen monitors that warn you when oxygen in an area is getting low if you want to be especially careful, but they're not cheap. A good one will cost you anywhere from one to two hundred dollars. I'm not saying that you need to wear an oxygen tank everywhere you go, but it's important to keep air quality in mind. You just need to know what to avoid, and most importantly, when to get out of an area.

- have a good understanding of surrounding dangers, including risks of point I
- identify/incorporate equipment needed in field (ie: flashlight, bail money)
- upload your successes, & stories to uer.ca forums including location db

Usually you can tell if a building is abandoned if it’s boarded up or has lots of broken windows. These are also generally easier to get into.
All you really need is some clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and a sense of adventure. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for any hazards and follow common sense and you should be good.
Optional but recommended items are a flashlight and a camera. We always love seeing other explorers escapades!
P.S. this probably doesn’t need to be said but drawing attention to yourself going in, while inside, or leaving isn’t recommended. Always good to practice light control (if at night) and volume control. Don’t wanna bother the neighbors, security, cops, etc.

Thanks! one of my friend's is absolutely bringing a camera, as far as I know it's a relatively newly abandoned building so it should be something fresh
