Brockton high school (1966-2019)
Toronto, ON
Spring 2019

Brockton was the first of the 3 schools to be demolished in this block – the others were demolished in the fall of 2022.

Auditorium. This place was stripped pretty bare by the time we got there.

The swimming pool was definitely the highlight of the site

I made a return visit a few weeks after the initial one, at night, and new holes in the wall made for interesting lighting

Welding shop... I was rather envious; we only had a wood shop in my old high school

This console still had power

I think this was a big kitchen or cafeteria thing? They had a huge washing machine or something if I recall

my "stand in a rubbish bin and wobble around" method of traversing a flooded basement

Amazing to see a high school with a competitive pool. Unbelievable!

PS - my thoughts don't mean shit, but I think it's insane that you traversed a flooded basement after seeing power on that console.

you know what - I don't think that thought has ever crossed my mind; and I've walked into at least one other flooded basement in a building with some power

a cursory internet search suggests it's not super dangerous (outlets have power and ground side by side and you'd have to have less resistance than that path, circuits should be fused etc) but I guess you never really know?

also I guess if it was a real hazard they'd rope off the basement or something to prevent the demolition crews from going there?

definitely something to think about next time, thanks!

You must be right with the workers being present.

I already made at least one life-changing mistake exploring. Needed surgery and a full 12 months of physio to recover. Thankfully, I have a job with excellent disability coverage where it did not matter that I was injured outside of work. Had it not been for that, my family would have been financially fucked. And I probably would have cheaped-out on the physio to desperately try and save a buck and might be sitting here to this day without regaining full mobility. I stop myself many times now in this hobby and remind myself that certain rooms, photos, and locations are not worth it.

But ohhhhhhh so hard to turn them down. It's a strong calling when it's in your blood!

I've made some dumb mistakes but haven't been bitten so far; I guess I haven't been in the game that long however. I remember when I first got into urbex about 5 years ago I spent alot of time reading about hazards and I took it super seriously - right up until I went to a few UER meets and saw how casually everyone else took it (probably not for the best?). It's certainly easy to become complacent and we should always remind ourselves that this hobby can be pretty dangerous...

I made a couple trips south of the border recently and the main hazard on my mind there was actually getting caught; that kept me out of a few spots... better to not get kicked and banned from another country haha

I'm the exact same. Exploring out of Niagara Falls, so I make very frequent use of the U.S. for everything from pizza to weed killer to flying out of Buffalo airport to save Pearson's exorbitant fees. It would be a crushing blow to lose it for more abandoned locations.

My highschool actually had one, so did a couple others. At least two of the pools have been closed since, but none are "abandoned" lol

What a drag.

You know the new schools likely don't have the same good pools either.

I'm a supporter of gay rights. & not a closet supporter either. From the time I was a kid, I've never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community. There are so many qualities that make up a human being. By the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant. - Paul Newman
