Workers' Association House

Thanks to a more experienced urbexer's website I found this old workers' association house. Built in the early 20th century it was abandoned around 2010 because of its extremely poor condition. Since then the condition hasn't actually gotten better.

The former heart of the building, the assembly hall. This is where thousands of people have acted, danced and probably found love.

The cloakroom.

The house was indeed in a very bad condition. The floor was so rotten that it had collapsed in several rooms. The toy dinosaur is an interesting addition.

I have serious doubts about the upkeep of the house. Under the oven were retiree magazines from almost 40 years back. If they never did a good cleaning, they probably never did a good renovation either.

The attic featured just one room and some cold space. I would be surprised, if this hadn't been the caretaker's apartment at some point.

The building was demolished the following winter.

Cool place. Most of it doesn't seem that bad, especially for something that's been empty for over a decade. You'd think even a little bit of maintenance could have saved it.

Well, I guess it would have been possible to save it. But now it goes down to politics. After a civil war in the early 20th century Finland was very divided. The centre-right founded their own organizations and the working class their own. Of course each organization built their own houses. There were even different sports associations for the working class and the rest.

Since the second world war the significance of the organization has diminished little by little. The workers' associations are nowadays made up of very old people with long traditions and large houses with no funds to maintain them. Because of the traditions they don't want to give up the houses, so this is what happens.

And this one really isn't the only case around.
