found this large pit in the woods near a train track. The gray concrete part is above ground and the brick part is below ground. Had to climb up a tree to get to the edge. Anyone know what the purpose of this pit was?

That is pretty odd. Was there anything else in the area? It looks like it might have been a tank of some kind. Might be for storing coal cinders if its near a train track, but that's just a guess

there were a few ruins of stone buildings near by, nothing industrial looking. A few medium sized steel tanks were laying on the ground near the buildings.
