ABANDONED JUVENILE HOME FOR BOYS

This is by far the riskiest place I've visited so far. It goes by a few names: the San Antonio Juvenile Home for Boys, the old Home for the Aged, and the San Antonio Insane Asylum (even though it never actually was an insane asylum; that's a common misconception). Built in 1915, the first building on the property was constructed to be the new county poor farm, seeing as the old one from the 1860s was in terrible condition; according to newspaper articles from the time, a poor farm was a home for 'paupers and indigents' - basically poor people and old people. A juvenile home for boys was also built on the property shortly after, and at the time, it was a fully operating, 300+ acre farm. By the 1960s, it was no longer a poor home and was now referred to as Southend Sanitorium, a top of the line nursing home. The juvenile home for boys had closed in 1968 and was moved to a new facility downtown. By early 1969, all the residents of the nursing home were moved to new facilities, both to save money and because there simply wasn't enough manpower to tend to the needs of those who lived there. Aerial views from 1973 show two more buildings on the property that were gone by the mid-80s. Today, there are four buildings on the property: a small security gate by the entrance, a workshop, and two three-story buildings both with basements - one was the Home for the Aged/poor farm and the other was the juvenile home for boys.

This location is also allegedly very haunted due to a few unfortunate events that took place on the property. Firstly, in 1925, a 14 year old boy was taken to the hospital after ingesting rat poison. It's not clear how or why he was poisoned, but luckily he did survive the incident. However, in 1933, another 14 year old boy's body was found in the creek about a mile away from the property. It was discovered that he was killed by a 21 year old dairy worker at the farm by being hit over the head with a pipe. He was given a life sentence. Later, in 1974 when the county was trying to sell the property, 2000 bodies had to be removed from the premises. These were the unidentified dead bodies that had been previously moved there from the old poor farm, also when the county was having difficulty selling the old property. These bodies had been on the new property since 1913. It was discovered that 75% of these were baby graves, and due to the terrible record keeping, it's not certain if 2000 is an accurate number or if all the bodies even were removed.

I say this is the riskiest place I've been to so far because it is Bexar County Private Property. It's at the end of a dead end farm road outside of town, and it's currently used as a Bexar County police training facility. The current active juvenile home for boys is the property right next to this one. Needless to say, we ducked somewhere between 10-15 cops driving by while we were there. If you like an adrenaline rush (or 10-15 adrenaline rushes), this is the place for you!

Cool pics. Also, holy shit. 2000 bodies? That's absolutely insane.

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.
