Homage in HDR (to one of Ontario's finest)

There have been 2 or 3 really good posts made about this place recently but I still wanna throw mine out there. I made three trips last year in Sept, Oct and Nov and spent 4-8 hrs inside each time. I still feel like I barely scratched the surface.. You could spend a week on the property and still not see the whole place.

The first trip was pretty uneventful.. Multiple POE's, we just waltzed in then waltzed out. It was a total free for all with gaping holes in most of the buildings. On this trip we didn't see or hear a single soul. We spent most of our time in the north and south complexes which seemed to be living quarters on the above levels and storage/common areas in the basement. I forgot to bring the mount to attach my camera to the tripod so I was a bit pissed off and my pictures came out noisy due to high ISO.

The second trip was a little busier. Almost every entrance we used the month before was boarded up. Finally got into the north complex. Tried to access B building through the long connecting hallway but heard someone banging around down there and decided to access it from above ground. Had to wait for an unmarked security car to do it's rounds then hopped in. Heard the same person below us now using some sort of power tool. Something big and loud like a sawzall or hole hawg. Decided to head upstairs, start at the penthouse and work our way down. Spent most of the day in the tall, medical B building. On our way out we saw a scrapper pulling some wire from a small electrical box outside. Eventually security saw us outside, he pulled up, waved from a distance then put his headphones back in and we were on our way.

The third trip was the most interesting. We immediately saw a marked maintenance truck instead of the unmarked security and had to circle the perimeter of the property to get to the north complex. Again, every entrance from previous months was boarded up and it took us a while to find a new way inside. This time we had no problem accessing the north, south and B buildings by the long connecting hallway that runs across the property. From the upper levels we saw a couple scrappers carrying large garbage bags get confronted by maintenance. The next peek outside revealed the truck driving around with the confiscated garbage bags as well as large sheets of plywood in the bed of their truck. We realized we better start making out way out before they throw up more boards and we have an even harder time leaving. We also heard someone stirring in one of the closed off rooms on the upper floors. In the end we got out unscathed and without any confrontation.

Most of these pictures are HDR, which has always been my favorite way to shoot. They're ordered (approximately) newest to oldest and include both well known locations on the property. If you're not aware, the older buildings were made in the late 1800's and the newer in the early 1970's. According to information online, abuse and mistreatment were a common theme here. Although they lessened over time it seems like they persisted even through to the more modern buildings. Soon, all but two (heritage locations) will be torn down to make way for dozens of townhouses and apartments. This location has to be my absolute favorite I've been to even though it's so badly vandalized. I love the mix of destruction and natural decay. Combined with a heart wrenching and controversial history it makes for an interesting, mesmerizing and sobering trip. The last picture is a cell phone shot but it gives you a personal peek into the history and really gives you a sense of what I'm talking about..

Well done capturing as much of this place as you have, it's a great property and the old asylum is definitely a classic!

Let me show you how the main hospital looked in 2016, this damage that you've captured is only from the last 1-2 years

Sheesh the amount of damage done to it in such short time. Terrible.

Thanks guys! And Freak, I believe it. I've seen your shots before and I always assumed they were from late 2014/early 2015 right after it closed but it's cool to know that was still a couple years after.

Some of the machines in the medical building had stickers that said they were "decontaminated" Nov 2020. The first time I visited in Oct 2020 I swear there were lights on in the upper floors of the building where Dynacare (I think) was operating. So I guess that makes sense.

The north complex was already completely trashed at the time, the south probably was too but I didn't check it out. I'm just wondering how on earth they kept the scrappers out of the medical building while it was still operational..
