The Abyss Gazes Back

I was just studying online maps recently, not for any particular purpose, other than possibly trying to figure out where I'd driven past an abandoned red-light district recently. Then I noticed a line in the map showing a projected extension on a subway line, which actually showed signs of an open trench where they were digging the tunnel. The online map information was probably a few years old, but I headed over anyway, to see if there was still anything worth visiting.

1. A three-wheeled scooter parked outside the construction area I'd noted.

2. This used to be an open trench, but they've since filled it in.

3. A wider construction area I figured would lead nowhere.

4. ovvo

5. I found a stairwell secured only by an unlocked bolt, seemingly not used in a while, so I entered.

6. About five levels down, I found myself standing on a concrete surface, which I determined to be not the floor, but the top of the subway tunnel. You can see ahead where the shape of the tunnel appears to change, from box to tube.

7. Time to ascend #1.

8. On the surface again. Some of those apartment complexes are built on the locations of former exploration sites, dating back to 2016.

9. I took another staircase down, and this one led to what appeared to be a subway station.

10. It was about 5pm, and there was sunlight all the way down here.

11. Whoops, wrong turn.

12. Subway platform.

13. Under the subway platform, there are lots of little spaces.

14. Down this way about a kilometer, this tunnel connects with the end of an active subway tunnel. I'm kind of curious to see what that would look like, but it's a bit too much of a commitment.

15. The other direction, the tunnel seems to lead to the Baal-rog's den.

16. I turned back once because I thought I heard voices down there, but I decided to keep going and found nobody.

17. This is looking back at where the tunnel goes from box to tube, as in picture 6.

18. I followed the tunnel around a long curve.

19. In this direction, it's basically straight for about 4 kilometers, and goes under the river, which is on my bucket list.

20. Not this time though, not without alcohol and maybe one friend. So I turned back.

21. Good colours down here.

22. Back at the train platform, where they're building stairs and/or an escalator.

23. And this is my way to the surface, about five storeys up an elevator shaft fitted with rickety construction stairs.

This looks like an awesome explore, I'd love to see something like this. What do you think the things on the ceiling are in pics #14-20?

I suspect those will eventually hold the power supply for the trains, sort of a third rail above rather than below, in consideration of us trespassers.

Paid another visit finally, in anticipation of a major holiday next weekend. My plan was to take a skateboard down into the tunnel to get around more quickly, but I was surprised to see the tracks have already been laid.

1. There's a new entrance to the tunnel now, a several-storeys slide with a steep drop at the end.

2. After going to the bottom of the slide and climbing up, I saw a guy dressed as a subway construction worker passing by on what passes as the sidewalk, and took this picture. I turned around to find about four more workers coming right toward me, but they all trudged past, I guess too tired at the end of a long Saturday.

3. This is the non-crazy way in and out of the subway construction. But it's less fun, less scenic, and louder.

4. There were still workers present at this temporary construction headquarters next door to the excavation, but there were last time as well.

5. The men's room and the no men's room. In order to prevent Dougo from having more content for a follow-up Poo Zine, I spent some time in here before proceeding.

6. Here's how it looks at the bottom of the excavation. The bottom of the slide and drop is down at the far end.

7. I went down to the tracks to find they were already installing suicide doors, and had this alarming SAFETY LINE up.

8. Tracks are still under construction, and machines are parked on them, so I wasn't exactly worried about being surprised by a train rolling through.

9. Some of the equipment taking the form of rail vehicles.

10. From the other side.

11. I went a bit farther than last time, down this straightaway which leads under the river in the distance. It's a long walk offering little cover in case workers come around, so I didn't go all the way.

12. Another crude construction vehicle.

13. I decided since I was already down here to try going the other direction, toward the active subway line being extended.

14. There's the end of the tunnel.

15. A closer look. Behind the scaffolding is a white temporary wall separating the subway tunnel extension construction from the actual active tunnel.

16. I peeked through a door, and here is an active subway tunnel. It's actually darker in there.

17. I turned around and headed back, only to find three sets of tracks behind me, not two. The middle one must be for trains to turn around or something.

18. Back at the station platform.

19. I decided to climb out this way, although it was much harder the second time, as my shoes were damp and had less grip.
