The good folks at the Healthy Housing Foundation have purchased another illegally emptied 100+ year old residency hotel, the Leland across from the famous King Eddy Saloon and speakeasy. Soon they will be returning the 64 single rooms to low income housing use, but before they clean things up, we got a chance to walk the pigeon coop halls and rat's nest basement of this mysterious place, which is built at a strange angle and still hides some treasures in its heart. Photos and the story is here: https://esotouric....k.com/p/leland2022

Years ago when I did asbestos removal, I was working at the old Press Club hotel in San Francisco. How long ago... So long that it was cheaper to source the demolition work to some crew from England and fly them out and house them for the duration of the demo. Pretty much the same kind of hotel as you posted, but built 1882 I believe. Became a "resident hotel" after although the Press Club was still on the ground floor and relatively fancy. Lots of really cool old stuff in there just being thrown away. Every room had an amazing old solid wood door with fancy carving and real cut crystal-not glass- door knobs. All of that to be sent to the dump. Although they were probably too narrow for anyone to want to reuse them in new construction. Now it's some foofy rental space for conferences etc.

We went back to the Leland Hotel and discovered something new about that lovely sideboard! Even in such filth and degradation, there is beauty if you have the eyes to see it. https://youtu.be/44z3ahzBQOA

Loved reading your site. I'm a little surprised there isn't a sub-basement for the furnace.

Such a visceral account of your visit. Love to see affordable housing return to downtown.
