Workers' Institute

So I read in the papers about an abandoned workers' institute outside town. It was a protected building, but due to bad shape had been granted demolition permit.

It was built in the 1950's, and the rumor had it that CIA funded it to battle communism in Finland. This hasn't been confirmed. More about the history of the building here: https://desertedfi...aste-of-education/

The place was far from the nearest city, and it became impossible for the institute to maintain it with falling student numbers. It was sold and its premises were rented out to different people and organizations and finally it was abandoned for good.

I entered it one September evening with my lousy old camera. I didn't get very good pictures, but I'll post them here anyway for a reason:

This became one of my favorite locations, which I visited several times. I'll be posting the newer pictures to this same thread for comparison, when I finally get to them.

The other annex building. The part in the very left edge of the picture was built in the 1980's.

The lobby. As you can see, my camera and the dusk weren't a very good combination:

The lobby from the other direction:

There was a lot more to explore, but in the next room we found a bed and very fresh food packages. We didn't want to be surprised by anybody living there, so we left for good.

It took me almost two years before I managed to return to the workers' institute. This time we explored all the floors and buildings I had missed the previous time.

The previous time we walked through the ground floor, so this time we headed straight up.

Time had peeled off the paint and vandals had done the rest.

Basically the two upper floors of the main building consisted of a long corridor and identical rooms. All radiators had been removed since my previous visit. Here someone had removed the floor too.

Details like this were common in public buildings from the 50's. That would mean that the walls were never painted.

This is where we quit exploring the last time when we found a bed and some pretty fresh signs of life. But now we'd go further.

Here all rooms were of different shapes and sizes, but they all were equally smashed.

It seems that some renovations were planned but never executed.

Even the kitchen design looks like it could be from the 50's.

Up in the attic we found this strange installation.

In the other annex building was what I believed to be the former canteen of the institute. The new canteen was in another, newer annex.

When the workers' institute moved away, the house found other tenants. Someone actually lived here, because their mail was coming here. The address was to this location.

The basement was filled with water and books and files and stuff including loads of history documents of the institute.

The new canteen.

Upstairs were rooms where the institute students could stay.

Around 100 photos from the location: https://desertedfi...rs-institute-2016/

Another photo project with a dancer in this location: https://desertedfi...g-class-girl-2017/

Looks like a cool place. I've always liked architecture with minor changes in elevation within a floor, so #5 in your second set is interesting to me.

Another update on this location, or at least one of the annex buildings. Three years have passed since the previous photos.

The same view as in the previous set. Now there's just a lot more color.

There had also been a fire in one of the rooms.

And since the previous visit someone had even covered most of the windows.

Never did I expect to find a location, where there's less paint off the walls than on them.

The local pyramids.

If someone understands the sentence, please tell me.

So green. I do miss the summer.

The status of this location is currently unknown. Demolition permit was granted way back in 2014, but the company, which was supposed to build new apartments on the lot, went bankrupt.

The property was bought by another company, which actually started demolition n 2019 or 2020. They didn't get very far before they stopped. They state the reason as 'we found asbestos and the asbestos removal contractor is busy', but I hardly think that's the case. In the summer of 2021 they promised work will resume, but everything apart from the new canteen building was still standing in July 2022. This autumn they promised that bulldozers will be there by October, but I have my doubts. I live too far away now to check it, but when I get back there in the summer, I expect to find the buildings still there.
