Baron Hill Mansion

Baron Hill Mansion is an actual, legitimate mansion. A Neo-Palladian building constructed in 1776 on the site of an older 1600s house, it was a stunning, sprawling, house in it's day. Owned by a prominent landowner who owned much of Anglesey, an island located just off the north-west coast of Wales separated by a narrow strait, it remained in the family until the middle of the First World War, when death duties owed by the family made it impossible to afford to maintain the huge estate. In 1939 the mansion was requisitioned by the government and used to house Polish troops on a temporary basis. The troops however found the house to be too cold and in the winter of 1939 started a fire inside the property, which subsequently destroyed a large amount of the interior. The soldiers were removed but only to tented accommodation elsewhere on the estate, and the house has been left abandoned to this day.

There is something magical about this place. Walking through the dense overgrown foliage full of fallen branches and trees towards it, along a path adjacent to the old elevated driveway with the ruins slowly appearing through the trees is pretty special. The property contains not just the house, but numerous ruined greenhouses, a roman-esque folly, stables, and all sorts of other unidentifiable buildings. Whilst the interior of the main portion of the house is a total loss, the wings constructed on one side are somewhat more intact or at least recognisable.

The entire place is slowly being reclaimed by nature, and despite a plan to restore it being submitted in 2008, nothing has ever happened or probably ever will happen to it.

Beautiful shots. Love when nature starts to take things back but the architecture is still visible.
