No, I haven't been back. There are two other buildings right there, probably all belong to the same person but all are sealed up good. I should go scout it and come up with a plan.

That's an incredible find! I could try to tell you a bit about the hand crank ladder's history if you like. I'm pretty interested in historic fire engines, so know a little bit about stuff like that. My local fire department has actually kept / preserved something similar to what was shown in the photos since the 1860s. They still occasionally take it out and demonstrate it during town events. The machine in the photo has a similar mechanism to the one my fire department has, albeit a bit larger. It's very possible that the hand crank ladder is from the 19th century. If you are interested, I could try to find some more info on it.
