Gary Expedition Chronicles II: Going Public

First: Gary Expedition Chronicles I: End Stage Capitalism

Here's the second compilation of photos from my trips to Gary. This photo set focuses on public infrastructure that I explored in Gary.

First up is the famous Gary Post Office. Open from 1936 through the 1970's, this location was so well known that back in 2017 the city government selected it as one of nine buildings that were to be part of an "urbex tour" circuit to raise historic preservation funding. City Methodist Church and Union Station were among the other chosen buildings. This effort met its fundraising goal, but within the last few years the measures the city took to secure those buildings have failed and they are wide open again.

Next up is Mercy Hospital. In a show of just how much the Gary Police Department has given up on stopping urbexers, this hospital is a classic urbex location despite literally being within arm's reach of the active police precinct.

I have a buddy who was stopped by the cops on his way in once, and rather than tell him not to trespass they merely told him "Be out by sundown, that's when the crackheads show up. If you're still inside after dark, you're on your own- we're not coming in after you until morning." That made some of the graffiti inside particularly ominous.

Lastly of course we have Union Station, a rather famous train station in Gary. It's so heavily decayed that these days it resembles a bombed out World War era ruin, but we were in the area so naturally we had to stop by at least for a few minutes.

Also falling under the umbrella of public infrastructure is this building I've already posted before. We visited a second time, but I only took a few photos since I got most of the shots I wanted the first time around. Still, as a bonus have a picture of City Methodist rising up on the skyline from the roof.

That's it for public infrastructure. Next time, either a veterinary clinic or perhaps some churches. I haven't decided yet.

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

Mercy was one place I neglected to do on both of my trips to Gary a few years back, I had heard stories about how the police use part of it and they couldn't care less about explorers going in the derelict parts, I guess they've got a lot more pressing concerns in the city than bothering to deal with people with cameras.

Surprisingly, I've never had a sketchy encounter in Gary. South side Chicago, most certainly, but never Gary- and I've spent several nights camping inside an abandoned warehouse well within city limits. I guess there just aren't enough people left in that town for it.
