Too young for urbex or exploring with others?

Hey guys, I’m new to this website, I joined about a week ago. I was wondering if I am too young to meet up with others (Im 15). Not to mention I don’t have my drivers license yet (I have my Drivers permit though) I’ve been into urbex for about a year now, my older sister would drive me and we would explore. Thanks for helping.

One man's opinion:

I wouldn't explore with a minor - not even my own kids when they were minors (Of course that would have been dependent upon the legality of the location). I am not going to be responsible for a minor's first ticket, not to mention the potential for my getting an extra "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" ticket. Then I have some Chuck's parents calling me wondering why a 50 year old guy is creeping around their kid. Yeah..... Probably mostly the latter. Yup. That's the one.....

Yep, this 100%. I'm only 23 and I still wouldn't explore with a minor. It's just too much of a liability, legally speaking. And even if you manage to avoid a "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" ticket, an adult being caught in an abandoned building with a teenager is not a good look.

And as someone who started exploring at 16, I get it. It's frustrating being unable to meet up with people due to your age, and I felt the same way. But if you use your time as a minor to explore on your own, become a part of the online community, and build a solid reputation for yourself you can jump into the meetup aspects of the community with both feet the minute you turn 18 because you're known to be a trustworthy explorer. It takes patience, but it works- that's what I did after all.

So I wouldn’t be able to get full membership until I was an adult? Since you have to meet up with people.

I think I became a full member when I was 14. You don't have to meet with people if you can just prove to be a legitimate member of the community. I have only ever explored with people I don't know once, and they knew what they were getting into with the additional risk involved. It was also serious enough of a location where being with a minor probably wouldn't change much. I would try and just find a friend who's interested if you want someone to go with. I also don't have my license yet so I know how much of a struggle it is to get out to places. 2 weeks though and I'll be back to it if I ever get some free time.

Nope! While meeting with people helps, it's not a strict requirement for Full Membership. It might take you longer than three months (like it did for me) but it is entirely possible, and perhaps not even uncommon.

In the summer before I went into grade 5, I started visiting construction sites, and when I was around your age my friends and I used to bike to an abandoned farm on the outskirts of town. Not that we considered ourselves urban explorers, since that name hadn't been invented yet.

I don't really object to there being underage members on this site who could get full membership, and in the right circumstances I would explore with underage people.

There's another underage member who's been on here for about a decade; you should look him up. Oh wait.

Just keep doing stuff with people your own age you'll be 18 before you know it.

Be careful out there.

It certainly helps to explore with other members, but it really isn't a requirement. Lots of folks here have yet to do so, myself included. Share positive posts, don't give away locations, and post pics. Pics, pics, pics. You'll be a full member in no time. Good luck and stay safe.

Also, about posting pictures, every time I try to attach a file it tells me it’s too big for the limit. This even happens when I only attach one.

Yeah, the UER photo uploader is pretty subpar by modern standards. You're better off doing what many others here do, including myself, and host off-site. Flickr and Imgur are both good options that will generate a bbcode link for you, so you just have to copy and paste it into your post here to display the image.

I personally have my own Google account for exploring stuff, and I use Google Photos to host with a third party chrome plugin to generate a bbcode link. Then I just turn album link sharing on in Google Photos, copy and paste the bbcode link, and the photos show up here.

Stay on the safe side!

As a minor myself you arent gonna find many people older than you that want to go exploring with you (see all the other responses..) Stay around your age range.

Use this time to stock up on personal experiences, learning lessons and tips early, getting to know the field (and your own urbex style) and tons of pictures!! Have fun while young but PLEASE prioritize your safety above all.

100% agree with all the other posts here stay within your age range and try to sty tight with that group if they're interested in Urbex. I got into it in middle school and now it is my favorite thing to do on a weekend or weeknight when I'm free. Being a minor I would try to look for locations around your area so you can go with a group or by yourself when you get your DL.

Honestly, I think you should use your age to your advantage and find other minors to explore with. If you get caught, the offenses are usually much less and cops will usually give the benefit of the doubt in those situations. I started around your age and got detained for breaking and entering, but the cops just called my parents (arguably worse) and it didn't go on my record or anything. I am only 22 but I agree with most people in this that I wouldn't explore with a minor, just a bad look honestly. But definitely find other minors to go with if you want to go with others.
