Quick-- VERY quick-- trip to Fernald School today
< on 3/25/2021 8:50 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER ForumQuote
On a roll this week so decided to try to visit the Fernald School today. It was my first time actually walking in after a few drive-by's and one angry policeman a few years ago.

I only managed to get to the Powerplant today. Was crossing the road to head deeper in and saw a cop and two utility vehicles heading in the back gate, very close to me. I high-tailed it back to my exit point and left. Looks like they were just coming in to do some work and didn't pay me any attention.

Anyone else encounter the police there lately? I want to go back but wonder if it's better in the early AM at first light or on weekends.

Also, can anyone advise on how to use Quick Gallery Creator that Avator-X created? I have Flash downloaded but am not having any luck. Thanks!

Adobe pulled the plug on Flash 1/12/2021, it is not supported anymore. Not likely Av will update the upload tool, this website is not a priority in his life anymore - BUT he also, and at least, has no plans to pull the plug on UER altogether any time soon. It also isn't necessary with today's cloud hosting. I use Flickr for the moment - it's free up to 1000 pics. See link below to some other options for posting pics. Note the easy Flickr directions in tip 7.3.

Another easy way to figure things out is to click "reply with quote" on someone's post. You don't need to reply, but the reply box allows you to see the code in their quote that was used for hosting images, embedding video, or special fonts/colors. You can also reply to the same link below to practice posting your images. No one will call you out for editing the same post 27 times (using the "modify" button) there while you figure things out. If you browse the entire post, you will see lots of folk practice there, myself included.

I have been visiting for a long while now and never had any problems until recently, it seems like they have tightened security or something. I have seen cops sitting right at the "secret" entry points, not just at the main entrance any more. I would say be very careful entering and exiting this place but once inside I have yet to see anyone.

Security has been tight because someone set the administration building on fire, which is the sort of thing that happens when people name drop without thinking. It may not seem like it matters with a place that trashed, but trust me it does, so for the love of God will you please edit the name out of your post? There are a few well worn nicknames you could use that almost anyone who's been there would recognize. If you don't want security to get worse, don't add to the problem.

Oh come on now. Fern is the new Belch. People have been dropping the name since the place was still half active. The ship has not only sailed, but has already sunk.

Totally understand about the name. The only reason I included it was because it's on the public map. I don't include names of other places But thanks for the update on the admin building!

Ah, so good to know. I think the Flickr account is the way to go. I am technologically dumb. Thank you so much.

I didn't realize it was public on the location data base. No point worry about it too much then, but what I will say is that even for a worn out old place like that, any attention is always a bad thing. Last year they ran an article about the place to promote a light show the Lions Club was running. Not a week later, the place is on fire. The same thing happened when the T&G ran an article about Westboro. In the course of a year it got covered in graffiti and then someone set it one fire. Belchertown too and every time there's a fire, security gets out of control. I didn't spend too much time at any of those place myself when any of this was happening, but I know people who did and its always good to look out for them by not bringing attention to these places.

Any way, I didn't mean to get at you about it too much!

Oh no worries whatsoever. You have a very good point. Didn't even know there was a fire recently, but had heard about the lights show (sad I missed that). Also super sad that there's a bunch of idiots out there setting fires. I went back to Westboro a few months ago only to realize it had been demolished (hadn't been since 2018).

I need to learn me some of the other names for common places

Don't bother going for a while, someone set the chapel on fire a couple of days ago, so it's being watched heavily.

People say that you will be arrested and charged if you get caught. On my last visit there several years ago I tripped a "silent" alarm in one of the little buildings near the abandoned cop cars and security arrived in less than two minutes with a spotlight. Escaped due to sheer luck, hit the ground in an open area and the spotlight went right over me. Do not recommend, especially if the security has gotten tighter - All the "safe" buildings around the perimeter are boring.

However, if you have a safe route directly into utility tunnels that might change things a bit.

I don't know how Fern developed a reputation as being a trashed shithole, pretty big swaths of it in the tougher to reach areas are in decent shape and have a lot of neat stuff.

To be fair, this is true of many trashed shitholes. I remember for years after Overbrook achieved that status there was still a ton of cool areas to photograph.

I've heard even King's Park still has some decent spots in the campus peripherals, despite all odds. Guess it's hard to completely and totally trash an entire institution.
