Roofing in Lawrence KS, and my First Cop Encounter

Howdy ya'll, a quick preface:

The photos below are pretty bad, I apologize for that, I was not taking any photos as I was guiding the group around on the roofs, but thankfully one of my other friends was. Unfortunately he wasn't the best photographer, but I figured I'd still use his photos as they're the only ones I have.

SO! To begin, one of my friends and I had been scaling the roofs a couple days before, and we decided to do a sort of tour with two of our other friends. In total, that makes four of us. To begin we hopped onto a pretty small roof, here are some photos of that:

After spending a short time on that first roof, we returned to the ground and headed to a much larger one on the other side of the road:

After we had contented ourselves with the second roof, we started to head back to the ladder we used to ascend. We were still on the roofs, walking back, when we heard voices. We were unsure where they were coming from, so we stood still and tried to discern if there was anyone on the roof with us, blocking our exit. I asked my friends if we should try to hide, when a flashlight pierced the darkness from across the roof, and hit us. Then the flashlight's user let out a shrill whistle, and said 'there's no other way down, come on over.' that's when we knew we were fucked, and decided to turn ourselves in.

We walked over, and found two police officers on the roof, right next to our exit. They asked us who we were, and took our licenses to ID us. We collectively went with the rules of dealing with cops: we were polite, we didn't start a fight, and we were white, so they let us off with a warning, but said next time they'd ticket us.

From that they let us clamber down, and oh boi was it fascinating to climb back into that once dark and empty alleyway, now alive with police cars, police talking to local residents, and people at the edge of the alleyway trying to tell what was causing all the fuss. We quickly scampered out of the scene, and returned to our vehicles.

Now, while we were on the second roof there were a couple things we did wrong, that led to us getting caught. I'll mention them now, one for others who may find themselves in a situation, and two for other, far more experienced people to tell me whether or not the mistakes were actually mistakes

1) One of my friends, while we were on the roof, believed we had been spotted, and heard someone yell '(muffled) 5 seconds! (muffled)' this was, as we later found out, someone giving us a warning to get down or they'd call the cops. We didn't get down, as we were unsure if they had actually seen us, or if they were yelling at us in particular.

2) One of the people in our group was not very light on his feet. There were 'walls' on the roofs separating each building that were pretty easy to hop over, but this fellow would climb on top, and then jump down. This probably lead to people hearing us, and then calling the cops.

3) They saw us before we saw them. We heard voices across the roof, and if we had seen the cops before they pinned us with the light, I'm 99% sure we could've escaped by climbing to a lower point and then jumping the couple feet onto a dumpster or something. However, after they spotted us it was probably wise not to say 'you'll never take us alive!' and dash off. Had we have detected them first though, we could've escaped.

So that's the story, I hope ya'll enjoyed, and if you'd be so kind as to answer a question of mine that would be grand; how much of a risk is there of doing further exploration in this town/nearby? I was plotting a visit to an old munitions plant nearby, which is out of town but is on federal property. Is there a heightened risk now that they have our names? Or should I simply not worry about it? Thanks in advance!

This is why I hate smaller cities/towns. Glad they let you off. I would say visit KC or something and you may have better luck with the roofs since c*ps have bigger things to worry about. Also, make sure no one sees you. I'm guessing something you did at some point made it very clear you and your buddy were on the roof.

Also, for block-long roofs, it's a good idea to look for exit points before you start venturing and taking pics. Though I can't imagine there are a lot of places to run/hide in Lawrence, Kansas, so maybe the best thing to do was come forward like you did.
