Well written article! It's nice to read an article like this were the author doesn't try to sensationalize, but rather tells an accurate story of a man who lost his life in the service of his country.

It turns out the the crash site is just a couple of miles from I mine where I spend a week or more at every year. Next trip I'm going to have to try to find the site and drink a cold one in honor of Walt. I'm proud to have been able to participate in one of the Beer Command's commemoration placements. Junkyard has placed a number of these monuments. These men were the unknown heros of their time.

Thank you so much for helping with that one. One of the ladies that used to work with him figure it out that it was me that put that one up. When they first saw it, they had no idea but then she heard through the roadrunners about this and put two and two together. 2 years ago I was there with the rest of the combined test Force at Edwards for the 10th anniversary of Cools' crash. It was an amazing experience. And about 50 people came from all over the country to be there for their friend.

That was a hell of a read. It's always cool to see urbex lead to stuff like this, it's a shame the Roadrunners are pretty much all gone.

there is a place like that near here where a Boeing B-47 Stratojet bomber from Plattsburgh AFB smashed itself all over Wright Peak in the Adirondacks. There is still wreckage all over that mountain decades after the fact (too remote to haul it out). my father has pictures of the monument up there.

Aran, that's not exactly true. There is definitely less than there used to be. And every year there are a few less. But we still get together for beers and stories once in awhile.

Look up "The Hunt For 928" on the https://www.otherhand.org/ website if you haven't already - the owner, Tom Mahood (of Death Valley Germans fame) found the spot in the late 90's after quite a bit of searching.

Yep. That's exactly how I found out about it back in 97, when it was still Bluefire.org. That, and the website are mentioned in the article. The biggest thing about this was to bring these man out of obscurity and recognize them for their sacrifices. I made a promise to them several years ago that their story would live on at least one more generation.

I intend to keep that promise to my friends.
