I have to agree with this. In PA nobody was even following the stay at home orders. A buddy of mine who works at a pizza shop told me that they hav huge orders for people throwing "quarantine parties".

I'm also getting really sick of people saying that this is communism as if this has anything to do with politics.

This seems especially ironic for PA, given that they suffered incredible losses for making the exact same mistake during the Spanish Flu epidemic. They decided to celebrate the end of the "Great War," by hosting a massive parade. Two weeks later, they were overwhelmed with flu victims by the thousands. Philadelphia lost something like 8 times more people than many other major cities during the 1918-19 "second wave."

You are now required to wear a mask if you go into Menard's*.

If you don't have one, they'll gladly sell you a paper mask for a dollar.

I opted to go to Lowe's instead.

Why? Seems like a good precaution, unless Lowe's has better masks. Even if you were one of those idiots who believes the virus is fake news and were not taking any measures, surely you'd still want to be around other people who were taking measures to not infect you.

A carrier will deposit the virus on surfaces with or without a mask.

Cheap paper masks may even do more damage than good by giving people a false sense of security.

As long as you maintain distance, wash your hands and keep your fingers out of your orifices, a mask is unnecessary.

Cheap paper masks don't sound useful, but real masks make the difference between Seoul and New York.

The last 24hrs saw the lowest recorded death toll in the UK since March 24th, this is partly down to there being fewer deaths documented on weekends but the general rolling number of deaths over a seven day average is decreasing steadily.

New cases haven't been reducing at the rate they should have been though thanks to the sheer number of morons in this country thinking none of what is going on applies to them.

Or actual testing and surveillance of cases.

My suspicion is that asymptomatic carriers are doing the bulk of the damage because they're not getting tested and/or quarantined.

In Iowa, there's only one lab in the state doing tests and you have to be symptomatic to be qualified to be tested. That's like trying to save the Titanic by standing on the deck and affirming there is a leak somewhere.

As of Friday, Iowa allowed restaurants to reopen, but bars remain closed. You can still drink in a bar, but you can't sit at the bar. Sounds silly to me.

Saturday, after that trip to Menard's, I drove by the Boone Speedway and even though the bleachers were empty, there were people elbow-to-elbow on the catwalks and the pit area was business as usual.

Then I see this from France and if you notice, most of the cops are not wearing masks.

Wisconsin's Supreme Court ruled the stay at home order unconstitutional yesterday afternoon, effective immediately. Within hours bars were filled with patrons all over the state. It's been described as a "wild west," with complete disregard for social distancing or even wearing masks.

We're so fucked.

Asymptomatic carriers are less of a threat if they have proper masks, and everyone else has proper masks.

Only 160 recorded deaths in the UK over the last 24hrs, even lower than yesterday - if tomorrow the recorded number is somewhere between 200 and 400 we really will be getting there. I'm not getting my hopes up of it lasting though considering how many idiots there are out there now.

It's been 18 days since our gay nightclub outbreak, and the number of newly reported cases is trickling down, with 13 being the latest number. We're far from in the clear and the same thing could happen again. It'll take a lot longer for countries hit harder to get to this level, but once the numbers start to level off, it is very pleasing to watch them fall.

545 deaths in the last 24hrs - worth noting that it's almost 100 fewer than last Tuesday - so still going in the right direction at least. Slow progress but it's progress - case numbers are still decreasing as well.

Construction sites have reopened in Montreal this past week. Gradually, anyway. So that's something.

Poor rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest though. Our main shopping / tourism drag has been in the throes of a three or four-years-long reconstruction project since last summer. Recovery of our downtown core from this Covid crap seems doubtful at this time.

I was listening to this on Marketplace about how a lot of smaller, private colleges will small endowments are basically done-for if they don't reopen in time for the Fall semester.

https://www.market...after-coronavirus/

For a baseline, Princeton University has an endowment of $26.1 billion.

Looking around Iowa at various universities and their endowments...

Safe:

Grinnell College: $2.07 billion.

Up the creek:

Graceland University: $37.2 million.

Clarke University: $24 million.

Grand View University: $19.2 million.

Upper Iowa University: $15 million

Maharishi International University $9 million.

William Penn University: $7.6 million.

This has been a somewhat better week than previous ones with regards to the stats and the numbers. The number of deaths from the last 24hrs was 282, which is 1/3 of what it was three weeks ago which is all promising signs, I wouldn't be surprised if over the weekend on one of the days we see close to under 100 recorded deaths.

On Thursday the lockdown rules are once again being reviewed, hopefully it'll be the start of moving forwards positively and then I'll be able to get back out exploring once more because I'm going stir crazy here. Whilst there isn't anything to actually stop me doing it right now the general consensus amongst most of the exploring community in the UK is that it's not worth it right now, the risk outweighs the rewards. Granted there are still people out there who don't care, usually the 'exploring with' kind of idiots who would flout any restrictions anyway.
