The locations in the DB for non full members mostly non longer exists, but I think it's always cool just to wander around the DB and take a look at the old spots your area had before..

Oh nice, I was not aware that there was more in the DB for members. Thank you KINDLY for your input. I agree it is cool to wander around and see what used to be!

Did we? I went looking through the search tab for keywords such as "database" and no discussion threads like this came up, so I thought I was imagining it.

I believe this all came up when someone suggested that the website was dated and was overdue for updating. I seem tor recall that thread also included a bunch of Av bashing and crying about the Xmas theme...

I like to think of the DB as a wonderful relic from before the days of social media...

didn't we have this discussion this spring over the DB and site in general?

I thought UER was social media... FB is spyware

This whole website is dated as hell, but seeing as I'm new here, my first impression was that the old-time aesthetic was charming. The map is totally fucked though, I actually thought the locations were all wrong on purpose. I do, however, LOVE finding new places on maps, and I can't wait to start taking care of my local area in the database here (including current, off-map sites). I think it's a terrific resource; I just used it to find a now long-gone place I visited as a kid, and those photos really took me back. I didn't know any such website existed before now, so going from nothing to this seems awesome.

A lot of locations in the DB are not where they say they are. Reasons can vary.

1. Some people intentionally put the location off a few blocks or a few miles thinking it will protect it. Well that horse has been beat into Alpo a dozen times so I wont elaborate

2. Some people cant read a map or put the marker in the right place due to:
2a. poor map reading skills
2b. they simply forget and the entry system does not make that a required field

3. The map works fine the people putting the entries in are whats "totally fucked" as you call it. I put a location in the middle of the Houston ship channel once by mistake. The map says you have to swim or take a boat. It was wrong only because I inadvertently clicked the cursor and put the wrong info in. The map is driven by Google and its not always correct even if using your own LAT/LON cords in a metro area especially it can be off a few decimal points.

4. once again basic 4th grade map reading skills, the tops of many buildings look the same from the satellite view, if you cannot tell you have to use land marks such as third building east from the intersection or building with the big tree in front this helps

5. most people can figure it out if the location is a private residential home but the map shows a 2 acre parking lot next door, well its a safe bet the map will be totally fucked and you need to find an easier way to mooch your locations LOL... might even encourage people to try exploring for once hahaha!

Why do you have to be a dick? we are just making comments here that any inexperienced person here is capable of making. And I am humble enough to admit that I am very far from being an experienced explorer to say the least. It's no wonder nobody contributes to the DB because they post something and assholes like you go right ahead and belittle them.. and for no reason probably than the fact that your profile star is double digits as opposed to mine/theirs.

I realize my voice in this thread is of no significance presence especially since I am not a member, but I will be blunt enough to say why don't you come down off your high horse already and be a little more respectful to us newer people here. We are here for the same reason as you and that's to explore..

But that's the end of my rant..

Peaceeeeee!

I'm not complaining about anything. I haven't at all actually. Aran asked a community wide question to which I gave a simple observation that I noticed a lot of places (not all) in the DB that I ventured out to were in ruins or decayed to the basic foundation. I haven't been active enough on this site to know that there are more places in the DB for members exclusively.

Then you came in here down talking me in a condescending manner, acting like everyone else that doesn't think like you must be dumb too.

Yea, your star says 14 years, but I'm pretty sure at one point it also said 1 year too. So there you go, you were once in the same shoes I'm standing now. with plenty of questions i'm sure.

And if you also don't mind, I'd appreciate if you removed that petty comment you made about me from your signature too. I don't really know what your trying to start with that, but i'm not about to act like a 5 year old here..

Thanks..

You are acting like a 5 yr old. You need a safe space I reckon. All I did is point out the DB map is not "totally fucked" at least for those that can understand how it works, a simple concept.

Youre having a personal problem I suspect, sorry youre not an elite 14yr "member" yet like all the rest of us. You have what about 65 posts why not read and participate in a positive way a bit more before declaring things totally fucked. Youre wasting my time and bandwidth now. Feel free to keep on whining though.

Peeeeeeace...

Good point but I doubt the jack-booted thugs will be raiding us anytime soon. Av keeps the anonymity factor quite high on UER I believe. Maybe Canada has an equivalent of the U.S. ATF that's reading blackhawk's posts, getting a warrant or court order for us, sharing them with Google then sending them to China through Hauwei or whatever spy company or somethingorother.

Wait I hear an APC rolling up on my position right now gotta bugout! Id help you Stimpy but I don't have enough room in my 1986 Jeep for everyone. Save yourselves!

i don't think you're going to fit in well here... abrasiveness is kind of a trademark of this forum. And we're not 'elite' members (do I smell jealousy)… those of us that have been here awhile are just that, those that have been here awhile and seen so much and so many things come and go. The DB is the way it is for quite a few reasons that I am sure have been touched upon. Do you have any idea how many unique and interesting locales have been lost to arsonists and vandals over the past fifteen years? Seriously? Or how many have been plundered? That's why the DB is 'fucked', as you so delicately put it.

tell you this, kiddo... I've known 2x and Blackhawk a long time. I value their counsel and their posts. I've never met 99% of this forum face to face, but I get the feeling that most of them I could call for bail at 3am. They are that kind of community.

anyways... ever get that feeling that you're morphing into a moose or something?

Goddammit I might have to boat post on my own thread if this keeps up. Somehow I get the feeling I really shouldn't be that surprised...

Anyway, I personally feel that the database can be an interesting way to share low value locations. I try to maintain the database in my general area by keeping it up to date and adding some new locations, but I only ever add locations I find myself (never ones given to me by other explorers) and only locations that aren't super vulnerable to thieves, scrappers, and arsonists.

I think that it can be an interesting way to document sites as a community- browsing a site you've been to and seeing somebody else's photo album provides a sense of community and shared experience- plus, I've found that it can be a useful starting place if you're traveling and looking for something to explore while on the road.

Overall I think that not every location should be on the database, but if an explorer judges that it won't be harmed by being posted, I think posting them has some benefits.

I do my best to maintain the database in my region mostly for the sake of newcomers. It shows them that there are/have been places worth exploring in our area (good sites are few & far between here, and generally don't last long), gives them an idea of what kind of places they should be keeping an eye out for in the future, and shows that there is some kind of local community.

In the age of facebook, twitter, instagram, and all the others, it'd be foolish for any of us to add our own special or prized locations to the DB, even as full-member-only entries. There are too many full members to trust every single one; there are members on here that don't always prioritize a site's protection over getting good shots, views, and likes. Not every site needs that protection, some are just too well known to ever be protected again, but the ones that need it don't always get it.

That said, sites that have been demolished or sites that are beyond saving should be added. The DB, despite its laughably small photos, can serve as a historical reference and still gives new explorers the chance to see incredible places that no longer exist. For example, P&A Mills was demolished and rebuilt a year ago, yet it's still not in the DB. Same for Pontiac Mills, which is thoroughly underway into its partial demolition and reconstruction into condos, yet isn't in the DB.

Tl;DR: I don't think the DB can still properly serve the purpose it was originally meant to for the sake of keeping special locations secret, but it can serve as a decent historical resource and window into past explorers' accomplishments.
