Just wondering about some suggestions from older and more experienced explorers
I’ve been using a 3m 6200 series half face respirator for a while as well as a full face 3m 6800 mask but as I recently purchased a (more) professional camera, it has been impossible to use with the mask on. The camera has a LCD screen for videos and can be used to view pictures but It’s not the same quality as using the view finder to take photos. I’ve used a N95 “Death” mask on small, non-toxic exploration but my next trip is going into a chemical plant with asbestos and other toxic chemicals so I need a p-100 mask that protects at least against asbestos. If anyone knows of a brand that would allow one to look through a view finder comfortably and still protects you, I’d appreciate that.

I never use them except for work and only when needed.
If the area is so contaminated you need a respirator, you'll need more than just that.
Most chemicals are contact hazards.
Not being able to see what's around can get you injured or killed, right there.

Masks rated for asbestos do little more than offer piece of mind. Unless you are using it with a full Tyvek suit that covers your shoes and head, with gloves taped to the suit, rinsing off ON SITE after the explore and leaving the suit behind, you are bringing asbestos back on your clothes, skin, and hair. You will breathe it in your car and at home when you take your exploring clothes off. Not only that, now it is in your car seats and laundry room. I would be willing to bet treading lightly to avoid stirring up dust and staying away from areas where asbestos tile and insulation is damaged, (asbestos is actually perfectly safe when encased and undisturbed) is more effective than a mask alone.
I only wear a N95 as needed, and only to limit stink and allergens. With mesothelioma gestation at 30-40 years, and me at 46, I am not concerned about asbestos. I also look at the limited exposure I have had and will have. The guys that got mesothelioma were folks that worked directly with it, day in, day out, not the weekend explorers from 1979.....

Give abandonment a reason for its sacrificial reclamation to nature. Love it. Remember it. Take a picture. Share it. Leave the decay to nature.

I appreciate the help but what I am looking for is a mask that allows for one to look through there viewfinder. I am not trying to start a conversation on the effectiveness of respirators or the necessity of them. If anyone has any recommendations I’d appreciate it
I’m not trying to be rude and I respect those of you who responded, it’s just I would just appreciate a recommendation

Use the LCD.
What your asking is pretty much optically undoable without a heads up display or such.
If you can't use the viewfinder, will you see the hellhole? Falls and structural failures are the biggest threats you face. Results are instant and final.
&
Don't stir up dust.

Use the lcd. I second that. Live view on a camera is awesome. Especially helpful for framing your shots as well.

Problem is if you really do need a respirator, all your clothing, hair, shoes and gear with be contaminated.
Keep a lense UV filter on front vented lens!

I agree with the " if you're not wrapping yourself in Tyvek whats the point of just a respirator ", Its like dipping your foot in the tub and hoping the rest of you will be clean by proxy. If you need more than a simple dust mask, then you need to suit up if you are truly looking to be protected..
I think the F-it don't wear one people are saying is unless its a fashion statement, you're not really protecting yourself, so why stress it if its not helping..

I understand that you want to wear a mask of some sort, but in my opinion you either don't need one or you need more than just a mask. I've only ever used a N95 dust mask once and I really should've been suited up. I touched one thing and I couldn't bear to smell my hand after because it was so bad. Lesson learned.
So to answer your question, wear whatever you normally wear but work around the mask. Try flipping your camera upside down if you're shooting horizontal or just using the screen. If you've got a mirrorless camera then you're looking at a screen either way. And if it's a true chemical plant, then there probably will be more climbing outside than walking around inside.

In a lot of these old buildings the asbestos is FRIABLE which means ITS IN THE AIR. You would need an underwater box for your camera and a FULL SUIT THAT YOU CAN WASH/SHOWER DOWN AND LEAVE AT THE SITE. If you wear breathing gear alone you will CONTAMINATE YOUR CAR YOUR HOME AND EXPOSE YOUR FAMILY TO ASBESTOS FIBERS.
