ok... there has been a big hole in my universe since I had to sell my Subaru back in 2016. As fate, luck and all things strange that happen to me happen, I came across another Subaru Legacy Outback wagon, with a 5speed, in nearby Ticonderoga. It belongs to a guy I used to work with and its for sale. Here's the titanic rub (and I have never seen a Subaru do this)… the driveshaft that runs from the transfer case to the rear differential sheared off about three or so inches from the front yoke assembly... and the other half of le driveshaft is MIA. I have NEVER seen a Subaru do this... what could be the failure here? and is it so expensive that buying the car is probably not a sensational idea? it's been bugging me. Any ideas? was it a mechanical failure or did his stepdaughter get it stuck and beat the shit out of it getting it unstuck?

This can happpen! I've seen it on poorly maintained Foresters where the rear driveline can't take it anymore and pops off...

you know, there is an irony to this post... a few weeks ago, I was asked to go for a drive to Warrensburg NY (about 40 miles down the road from me) to look at a 2005 Subaru Legacy Outback that my friends 15 year old son had a serious hobbyhorse about getting. (He turns 16 soon). I was skeptical when I got in the truck for the drive. It was nice... Ever look at a car and just know that even though the odometer was on the high side, the car was absolutely loved and cared for? that was this Outback. It was a higher end Legacy, had all the bells & whistles... was all BLACK... rims, car, windows... none more black. And it drive well despite 245,000 miles on the odometer. I didn't want to like it, but ended up liking it. what was funnier was that the guy selling it was a Subie fan... we were talking about bugeyes and rexies and just left my friend Andy behind. They bought it for $2000 and drove it home. The kid, so far, has washed the thing three times even though it hasn't left the yard. Anyways, my luck with Subies continues to suck balls... I looked at a 2000-somethint Legacy Outback yesterday. I got to the window, looked in and saw the autotragic shifter. Nope. Walked away. Anyways...

it's not a question of mileage (a couple of mpg's does not justify these shitty things)... it's a question of durability. CVT's are poo. if you absolutely must have an autotragic, make sure its an actual autotragic and not one of these aluminum boat anchors.

+1 for the "CVTs suck" vote. And I'm not just saying this because automatics suck.

Had a CrossTrek. The CVT is absolute garbage.

these are my pet names for automatic transmissions... they suck, blow, chew balls and are generally crap. I don't like them. At all.

Montreal Toronto Burlington VT (laugh, drive US Route 7 around *hardy har har* rush hour) did that shit for a few months. New York City Northern Jersey Boston (four times a year) Washington DC (every day for six months) Baltimore (every day for six months) & Atlanta all in a manual... still don't want an automatic. even now that I don't drive all that much, and it kind of sucks for me to drive, I still don't want an auto.
