I live in a major city, which is great because of how many abandoned structures there are. However, most of the best locations that I've discovered are in high crime areas. So I was wondering how other people deal with their fears of exploring in dangerous places, and if anyone has any tips on how to stay safe or at least feel safe. Thanks!

Don't go anywhere you don't feel safe. Only you know; how you carry and handled yourself matters. Since you'll probably be trespassing weapons are not a good idea; weapons can change a simple misdemeanor trespassing citation into felony charges.

Weapons can and will get you shot by local PD. I support the thin blue line wholeheartedly and they do make mistakes. But most of the time its from dumbasses carrying a hand gun or a knife and not listening to their orders.

I was actually considering bridging some sort of protection, but the cons outweigh the pros.

ll probably go during the day or on warmer days to avoid the homeless.

Careful with squatters as they do have legal rights sometimes as home owners. Personally I avoid where people live.

Go with manpower (3 is a good number) so that you aren't a simple target.

Carrying a pocket knife never causes a problem usually, as long as it’s legal. Just be prepared to use it and know how to if you pull it on someone. Just don’t pull it on the cops.

That may get you a felony charge if you're caught with it trespassing as it is considered a weapon. If you're in Canada carrying bear spray with the intention of using it for self-defence against people is considered being in possession of a prohibited weapon. That will absolutely get you charged and you will get at minimum a substantial fine and quite possibly time in jail. It is also extremely stupid to use bear mace in an enclosed area such as an abandonment because it lingers in the air and will very quickly fill a room causing issues for not only the person you tried to use it against but also you. This is very bad advice, OP do not listen to it.

The biggest thing I would say is common sense and keeping your eyes open. The only times I've ever had serious issues were when I surprised people who I didn't know were present somewhere. After that I generally try to make my presence known if the place is known to be popular or have squatters. On the issue of squatters I subscribe to the idea that places having them should be avoided. Going into where they live unannounced is very akin to going into someones home without their permission first, it's a good way to start conflict. If you are truly worried about a location and think you need some sort of device for self-defence either go as a group or don't go. Carrying a weapon for self-defence is not the answer. This isn't the police of the military, you should not forcibly entering somewhere hostile with the provision to defend yourself with force if necessary. Furthermore, as others have said trespassing is a simply issue to deal with. Trespassing with a weapon is not, it's a felony in many locations in the US and a serious offence in Canada too.

There is always the heavy tripod option
If there is something I want to do then Ill do it and if there is something I don't want to do than I wont do it. That's the Dandy way baby. |

My experience has been that you find more squatters in warm weather and less in cold weather. When it's freezing ass cold they tend to prefer shelters with heat over freezing to death in dark, drafty abandoned buildings.

I never would pepper spray/mace a dog, and I've dealt with vicious ones. It's inhumane to have an animal rubbing its eyes in gravel to try to stop the pain. Humans can burn through the pain... and then they will really be pissed. & If the wind blows it in your face or the perp barrels into you after being sprayed you better have practice with it beforehand. What goes around... goes around

This. I've said it time and again when people go on about carrying weapons on explores, swinging a heavy tripod at someone's head or legs is going to do them a fair amount of damage, and it's totally legal to carry on your person. I've explored in some pretty shitty areas in my time, both here in the UK and in the USA. Whilst I've been wary there's only one location that has genuinely given me real nerves (a certain church in Philly that Essexplorer can attest to). Use your common sense, NEVER explore alone and always have a get out option.

I live in a very safe area, but I always bring a knife with me, JUST IN CASE. I went out exploring late one night and had some dude following me, when he realized I knew that he was following me, he took off, but ever since then I've been carrying a knife with me. I know most of the homeless in my area so don't anticipate any issues with them, they usually just prefer to be left alone. Also, good idea to explore with a trusted friend or two. CMF
