do the thousand footers that cruise the upper lakes call at milwaukee?

I work feet from the south shore canal of the seaway, salties like the one you posted are not my usual boatfanning targets, i prefer the lakers, older, more history

Milwaukee is indeed a port of call for Lake Freighters. As is Manitowoc, and Green Bay. They even have room to come inland a bit under the Hoan Bridge to the last 2 remaining grain elevators, and sometimes port at Milwaukee Boiler for repairs. However depending on the how much Lake Michigan freezes, the port can be closed in the winter.

Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co, builds some monsters, idk about the biggest on the lakes though. None the less, it is fascinating to watch them navigate the new ships out around the horse shoe bend with literal inches to spare in the Manitowoc River to get them out on Lake Michigan....
