Your favorite tactics for avoiding security?
< on 6/27/2018 3:06 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER ForumQuote
Hey all, rookie here. Just finished scouting a location with my planned partner. We were not going to go in this time, we were mostly looking for possible entrances, checking for security, and just getting an idea for the place before we explored it.

While doing so we had a bump in with security. They weren't too suspicious of us, and after they told us we were about to enter private property, we left that side. We saw them driving away, presumably to patrol around the area.

I knew security was a common problem to get around in Urbexing, but I guess this made it more real. I'm pretty confident we found a relatively safe entrance, but still...

How do you guys avoid security? Any special techniques or scouting tactics that would be helpful to know?

And on a side note, if you're spotted while exploring, do you run? Play dumb? Be honest?

Thank you for all replies!

My favourite technique is going on major holidays.

When I get caught, I pretend I can't speak their language, and usually they let me go out of frustration.

I feel like wearing a hardhat, safety vest, and carrying a clipboard would work until somebody cared enough to talk to you. Then they could probably see right through you.

beat security at their own game. set up a deer cam at the road in and out - the kind that sends pics to your phone. Any car coming in on that road will send you a photo and give you time to beat a hasty retreat.

You may have to come back again when it cools off to retrieve the deer cam.

Each place is different but here are some basics that I follow:

- keep noise to a minimum (excessive quantities of broken glass or tiles make this harder)
- travel in small groups, alone is preferred for me or no more than three
- use your environment to your benefit (conceal yourself or have a plan to conceal yourself)
- use windows to your advantage (where are they? Just use caution bc they can do the same to you if you're visible)

Remember they probably won't come inside

I like to call security guards "professional witnesses". They're paid to know how to respond to very specific emergency situations, and how to observe non-emergency situations for the property owner's sake. A security guard can't make arrests or hurt you or anything wild like that, unless you go in there with a gun or commit some felony action in front of them. However, a guard can remember your face and call the police.

I don't know how big this place is, but if it's small, there's a chance that these are just roaming guards who go from site to site to do checkups. If it's huge, you're probably dealing with mobile guards whose company thinks the site is important enough to station a vehicle at.

Maybe plan to go out a few hours and watch what they do, to get a better sense of the scope.

This site is an excellent resource, scour some of the past postings and you'll find a goldmine of anecdotes and do's and don'ts. Best of luck to you guys

This is very jurisdiction dependent - in Canada, and in many states, guards (and regular old property owners) can perform citizen's arrests of trespassers.

That said, many security guard companies, and many facilities, forbid their guards from performing an arrest to avoid the liability. In these cases, if you're caught, just calmly inform the guard that you'd like to leave, and walk away.

As for avoiding - a good trick that sometimes comes in handy if they do regular rounds is to time it - how long each patrol takes, time between each, etc.

Anyways run from security at a hot site.
They can't have you arrested for resisting arrest.
Never run from LEOs, unless you're damn sure you can get away.
Resisting arrest is a felony charge in most places.

Depends on your local laws. I know that in Wisconsin, security guards have no legal authority to pursue or detain- they can only observe and report. That may differ from state to state, and in some they may be able to make a citizen's arrest (detaining you until cops arrive) if they directly observe you committing a crime.

That being said, most security guards won't try even if they technically have legal standing to make a citizen's arrest because doing so might risk their job. Many security companies forbid their guards from doing anything more than observing and reporting to avoid liability issues.

Of course, this all goes out in the window when dealing with armed guards, but anyone considering trying to circumvent armed guards should really reconsider whether an abandoned building is worth their life.

Anyone can make a citizen's arrest.
Do not physically engage the guard(s)!
Run, evade and elude.
I don't give a rat's ass if a guard is armed, run.
Unless you robbed, assaulted, etc them, it's highly unlikely they will shoot you.

Remember if you were stupid enough to go into a DOE, Federal, the White House lawn or other high security military sites some may be authorized to shoot on sight.
An MP is police.
There are also RR police with authority across state lines.
FBI can arrest you for violating any local, state or federal laws. Never run from them... they will find you more than likely. They oversee security on all military bases stateside.
Know your site and LEOs.

I wasn't advocating getting into a physical altercation with guards- quite the opposite in fact. My point here is that guards are unlikely to try to detain you, If you are spotted you have a short window to escape between the guard seeing you and the police showing up, and your best option is being far away by the time they arrive. My secondary point was that an armed guard should be a sign that maybe you should forget about that particular location, whether they're likely to shoot or not. That includes federal and military properties. Anywhere the FBI or MPs are involved is a location best left alone.

As for RR police, yes they can cross state lines- but their jurisdiction is limited to railroad property in most states. In Wisconsin, that limit is 15 feet to either side of the tracks if I remember correctly. In California however, they have statewide jurisdiction, so knowledge of local laws is important.

Unlikely people will run into armed private security exploring.
And yeah sploring active sites with armed guards isn't a good plan.
My point was running from a guard is fine as long as you don't make physical contact with them.
&
RR cops can pursue off RR property for crimes committed on RR property I believe.

Lol, rarely will the FBI tagged you at the scene; they like to observe and come calling later. They investigate breaches on military bases and federal properties. Pics posted from a restricted area could trigger them to investigate.

Usually I like to wear all black/gray/dark green and bring any clothes for pictures in a bag with my other supplies. Also don't underestimate the power of standing completely still (this only works if you haven't been really seen yet fr) but I've had people just assume I was some kind of raccoon or something and leave me alone. Save running for a last resort, like if you know you've been seen and need to dip. If and when you're running away, watch your surroundings, getting away clean from the security guard only to get blindsided by a freaking tree branch can not ever truly be lived down Me and my buds are kinda lame, but we have sounds that work as a code, like turkey calls and owl calls and what not, to be less suspicious then just screaming someones name where everyone can hear

If you're not alone, use the buddy system, seriously. Being spread out means widening your risk area, no matter what the "risk" is. I also have a running method when I'm not ready to leave - hit the roof! Depending on the place, of course. It only works if you're in a tall building and haven't been seen yet. If you're in a single-story building, you're kinda screwed. I hid in a trash-filled closet while security circled a gutted single-story complex I was at this summer. The easy times are when they're in cars. The scarier ones are when you hear footsteps. At seriously open, decrepid buildings I think they're less protective of the property (because there's less to protect), as a general observation. Overall, stay quiet, and don't fucking smoke anything - smells give you away too! (Also, if you're gonna, be REALLY careful with that cherry and your flame, please. You don't want to lose your life, limbs, or exploring site.)

One thing that hasn't been mentioned here yet is to go at night. It's easier to sneak past security under the cover of darkness. You're less likely to be seen, and hiding places are more available in the dark.

Of course this has its downsides as well- you're probably not going to be able to talk your way out of things or claim "I didn't know I wasn't supposed to be here" if they catch you on the wrong side of several layers of security at 2:00 in the morning.

All black is bad. Not only does it look suspicious as fuck and make for a good storytelling if you do run into anybody, but it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Well I'm SOL for life! I only wear black and dark green, ever. I don't like being colorful. I don't own colorful clothing and I'm not about to go pay money for it. (It's obvious that I'm just a metalhead once you meet me.) But yeah, don't dress up like a cartoonish burglar. That's a decent rule. Just wear some everyday clothes, as long as they're durable and washable.

Buy a pair of jeans. We aren't SWAT, and we don't have to be colorful.

(Wow, this sounded kinda snippy.)

Honestly I find earthy tones to be ideal. A mixture of blacks, browns, greens, tans, and dull blues are the best. It's okay to wear black as long as it's not the only color you're wearing.
