Exploring Vancouver Island

Hey all,

I am fairly new to urban exploration. Since I was little I've had an interest in going places I shouldn't go. And my job has granted my access to places and parts of building that most people don't see, as well as sparked a passion for old, vintage mechanical equipment.

I've been reading the "Under the Garden City" megathread (every single post) over the last couple weeks and I found myself developing a connection to this site. Which I have never felt about a forum before.

I am looking for someone else on the island to explore with, hopefully closer to Nanaimo as that is where I'm from. I don't have a tonne to contribute location-wise, but I can provide good company. I work weekdays during the day but my schedule is mostly open otherwise.

If this is the wrong forum to post in, I apologize. I look forward to exploring!

I only visit the island about once a year but every time I do there is more to explore than I have time for in a single trip, keeps me coming back annually. There are at least a couple of island locals here that will probably reach out to you.

If you're itching to get out on your own maybe plan a day trip down to Jordan River, that's a good low risk place to start. There are a handful of interesting buildings to see with an extensive history and no security as far as I know. Do some Googling and read up, shouldn't be too difficult to learn your way around before you head out there.

And welcome aboard.

Yes, I'm hoping to have some locals reach out. I've been poking around some properties, am going to check out a shut-down plant hopefully this evening.

A trip to Jordan River is definitely in the cards, probably camping at China Beach (which I highly recommend if you're looking for a good camp spot).

Thanks!

You into mines at all? If so, check the island off-road forums and/or minfile.

Yeah I'll definitely have to look into that. Something about mines seems kind of sketchy but worth looking into. Thanks!

I'm not the expert on mines here, but the general advice is to stay away from coal mines, which Nanaimo is sort of famous for. Copper and gold mines tend to be safer, and there are plenty of those too.

All mines are dangerous, but you can mitigate some of that by being prepared and not going alone.

Makes sense. I had a quick peak at the MINFILE as well as a quick browse of some off road forums. MINFILE has to be the most confusing database, couldn't figure out how to use it. Offroad sites had some hits, but mostly for offroad (I have a Honda Fit, lol).

Hopefully I will meet someone who knows some spots locally.

Hey, I am on Vancouver Island as well. I have heard rumours that they have fixed the old road going up to the Jordan River dam. That might be worth the trip. I live nearby so I'll check it out eventually.

Hello! Still looking for people to explore with? I am from the Island as well! My sister and I have checked out quite a few of the mines on the Island, they are very cool.
