Back in December I tagged along with a friend of mine who was going to Finland to visit her mom. Somehow during the visit, the topic of urban exploration came up, and my friend's mother mentioned a nearby dilapidated match factory in the city of Tampere. The next day, she brought me out there and waited in the car while I explored (she was the smart one and stayed warm).
Built as a match factory, it operated form 1926 to 1975, where it was bought by an auto dealership. Trucks were kept there on the property, but none of the actual buildings were used during this period. Eventually, the owner of the dealership passed, and so did any justification for the existence of the property.
The city owns the place now, but the auto dealership has leasing rights through 2025. Once that lease lapses, it'll be interesting to see what happens next. The rest of the city has been rapidly redeveloping, and while there have been rumors of future plans, none have come to fruition. BONUS: Historical photo of the factory in its matchstick days.

This is super interesting. I have never considered the concept of there being a factory for matches. Just imagine how many matches just one of those boards in the last picture made...

That looks really cool! I may be around Finland this summer, this would be a cool place to check out.

Same, I thought that matches were made in heaven. I'll see myself out.
