So anybody looking around for abandoned buildings has undoubtedly, come across several needs for a ladder.
Persnickety POEs can't be reached without one. Maybe you need a ten footer, Or possibly you're bold enough to go for the two man job weilding a 20-40 footer (UNLIKELY)
In any case, I have apprehensions:
1) What are the legal ramifications of being found using a ladder to enter an abandoned building? (Posted 'No Trespassing' signs or none posted at all)
2) What are the laws in regards to using a ladder as a potential "B&E" tool?
3) Can a cop in this scenario confiscate your ladder and simply never give it back?
The more I think about using a ladder, the more it seems like a dumb idea.

I've been thinking about this too. There's a building in my hometown that's short enough for a ladder but I'm skeptical for these reasons. I feel like using rope is a more sneaky way to get up short walls but it can be a lot trickier to find a hook.

I don't know what the "zoom ladder" Zod mentioned is, but I know someone who bought a telescopic ladder as well as a rope ladder - I suspect the telescopic ladder is similar to the zoom variety. It basically folds into itself and you can extend the legs and lock them into place, and viola, a ladder is born.
I've never even seen the things but to my knowledge she has maybe used one of them one time. She said the telescopic one is very cumbersome and heavy to carry around and the rope ladder's usefulness is limited because you have to be able to access your high point in order to rope it down.., or perhaps learn to lasso your anchor from below? Probably not a good idea, lol.
Ironically, I was in a location this morning that I absolutely needed a ladder. Had I had a ladder, my POE would have been incredibly simple and I could have easily accessed at least half a dozen buildings that were otherwise inaccessible (okay, let's just say they were tricky and required a great deal of effort and I wasn't willing). They were all very well secured but only the first floor, about the first 12-14 feet around all the structures, but they completely ignored the second stories leaving them wide open. I see that happen a lot, actually. It was one of those, "how bad do you want it," scenarios. I knew these buildings were gutted and about the be demolished and thus decided that I did not want it bad enough. Any lingering hesitation was quickly snuffed out when the sun started to come up and I realized the buildings were all flanked by poison oak. No thanks.
But if I'd had a ladder....

In the UK, being caught by police with a ladder without a good reason to have one - around a derelict building, for instance - could land you with a charge of 'going equipped to steal', lumped in with the same stuff as burglary tools, hammers, crowbars, that sort of stuff.
I've only ever specifically brought one along to be used to get into a location once - the location in question having not one, not two, but three perimeter fences which all needed climbing, with the outermost fence being made of thick metal mesh that was designed to be totally un-climbable. We went in before sunrise then hid the telescopic ladder in some long grass just over the last fence.
That was a fun morning.

I used one once, but it was only doable as a two man operation. One person unloads the ladder from the car and climbs up, while the other person speeds off and ditches the car, returning for an assisted entry. Pretty risky item to use no matter where you're from, I think.

I use a tele ladder and I absolutely love the thing. It's definitely helped me get into a few places. Then I just hide it by the entrance so I don't need to carry it around.

I use one at work and I'm thinking of buying one of my own tomorrow to get intside a place. I'm just worried about having it confiscated, as well as the law's perception of how it was being used as a tool. I know I'm repeating myself, but I can't make up my mind. Lol

Nobody mentioned a monkey / suicide ladder yet.
Tl;dr the police will likely consider a ladder to demonstrate intent to trespass. In some areas entering without permission == B&E. In others it's just rude. Research local laws and see what has blown up before, legally speaking.
