Yesterday i was checking out an abandoned psych ward in Columbia Mo. upon entry to the first building (the least damaged) My nose started burning a little. then my lungs started to. we were in there for about 20 minutes then we went down a hallway then my respiratory system really started hurting then i looked around the corridor, to my surprise everything in there was covered in black mold...that is when i left the complex and i'm sick as hell. Did the mold cause this? what are the side effects? please promptly respond if you believe this is life threatening. also i would like to hear your experiences with black mold.

If you're experiencing the symptoms you describe, don't stay at home until you figure out the cause yourself, go to the hospital.

Likely, however we've had at least one member here pass from stuff they inhaled on explores. Mold and the other things that can grow in abandonments can seriously fuck you up, even if you start to feel better. There is a thing called fungal sinusitis for example. Takes a while to develop, but it's literally your body fighting fungal spores that try to grow in your sinus cavity. Takes a long while but eventually your sinuses will swell/grow shut and require extensive surgery to fix. ALWAYS wear a particulate mask until you are certain that there are no contaminants in the area. Stagnant air, trapped moisture, etc are a promise of at least a few varieties of nasty growing somewhere. Let alone if there is asbestos fibers you are kicking up, etc. It is even more important (and it is already really important) if you live in an area with bats. Histoplasmosis is easy to contract and can kill the shit out of you. See the comment about the above member that passed away. 90% certain that's what he caught, but I can't remember.

TLDR: Get checked out anyhow, and don't be a retard. Wear a P95 or better mask at minimum. Unless you know how to properly wear and fit a respirator, I don't recommend them to folks. Improper fitment on one can be way worse than wearing one of the rubber band crappiest walmart variety dust masks.

You don't need something that extensive. As DarkAngel said, P95 or greater is just fine. There's no point paying $50 just to replace the filters, since a P95+ will cost you that with filter clips. (I use a P100, they're widely available, you can buy one at Home Depot.)
One day I got a good camera. https://www.flickr...hotos/fleetsurbex/ | |
Went through this myself back in March after exploring the house pictured below. Symptoms didn't kick in when I was inside but were noticeable a few hours later, worse the following day. Went to a walk-in clinic that day, told the doc that I was in a house with serious black mold, he prescribed me a puffer, hit it every 4 hours for a week I think, maybe 2 weeks. Symptoms eventually went away and haven't returned since. Not sure if it was actually caused by the mold or not because a few of my friends were sick with sore throats around the same time. Best advice I can give besides the obvious preventative step of wearing a mask, go to a clinic as soon as possible and be honest and open with the doctor.
