Scavenging OK?
< on 9/5/2017 3:38 AM >

I have always enjoyed scavenging scrap/ discarded electronics and reselling the raw materials (copper mostly and a tiny bit of gold) should I scavenge on an exploration for useless junk to sell for raw materials or is this unethical for most explorers

there is a search feature you know

I suggest you start with search word ethics, then move on to scrapping, theft, selling stolen property etc

generally we like to keep all discussion topics about exploring, if youre exploring and the police see you leaving with an armful of copper or scrap electronic stuff youre now a burglar plain and simple

I know that this thread is a bit old, but I will express my thoughts none the less if someone happens upon this post. Not only are you stealing stuff, BUT it causes more disturbances for other explorers that merely want to visit a location to take photos and experience the location. You might be causing an eye that hasn’t been focused on the location to actually look more closely.

More focus on a location from the authorities = Less opportunity for explorers to experience the place.

Just don’t do it.

In my opinion you should be going into these places to document and explore. Not steal, not vandalize, and not party. These places need to be treated with respect so that the next person to come around can have a good experience.

Just for the sake of discussion, I'm going to come out in defence of partying at abandoned places. Done responsibly, picking up all trash and leaving no signs as per the course, but still partying nonetheless. Not sure your definition, but I've done anything from bring a couple friends and beers to an abandoned house or having a sex party in an abandoned hotel room, to organising a hardcore punk show at an evictee protest site or getting trashed in an underground river and setting off fireworks. Can't be done at every location, but there is room for leeway when it comes to not making an impact.

100% agreed. Keep the noise down, your presence unknown, no campfires, field strip and pocket your smokes, and carry the beer cans out. I see no harm in that.

On similar topic, from a property owner's point of view:

I have access to some awesome hunting/camping land in central WI. There is often evidence of partiers by means of our firewood being burned, and beer cans in the fire pit. When I asked the owner what I should I say/what would you say if I/you ever run across these clowns, he said he would tell them "I really don't care if you're here. Party it up if you must, but pick up your trash, burn your own damn fire wood, and save the peeling out for the street out front, not my land".

Give abandonment a reason for its sacrificial reclamation to nature. Love it. Remember it. Take a picture. Share it. Leave the decay to nature.

I would like to add, pulling this off can be challenging, as some sort of fuckup could happen at any time. I try to have events like this for meetups, specifically to bond people over forced problem-solving.

Basically I just go by the saying "Take only photographs, leave only footprints." Other people find different things photogenic so I don't usually mess with stuff too much

Thanks for reviving this year old thread, I was a moderator when it came out, I was able to get the O.P. banned, that should tell you something right there because most of the time I was not able to get some loser like this guy banned.

Scrapping is not exploring anyone who steals is just a thief, even if you believe it hurts nobody you are hurting us all if you get caught.

Be sure to tell the cops about UER if you do...

Did I say or imply that I steal things? Me stealing is not what I meant AT ALL. It was just a bit of a joke for a silly question.

Not to be going against you or anything and I mean no disrespect but Im just curious on why you are assuming I steal when I said I dont mess with things in an abandonment cause I know others find various things to be photogenic.

Also I was replying to this thread only 6 days after the last person so if I am confused about who you are talking to then ignore this.

Edit: spacing and: Like I said I mean no disrespect to you. You have been exploring since before I even knew abandoned things existed and you defiantly are more experienced then me so please dont take this the wrong way

that can was never shut Im afraid, as long as UER exists, we will have vandals, graffiti, scrappers and arsonists to deal with as a toxic byproduct of an urban exploring website

I don't fuck around with scrapping. It's just not worth it, plain and simple. It's hardly worth it when you have an avenue to legally obtain scrap materials, but to do it in such trivial amounts on a mission is just not worth it. And if you've made it worth it, then you're scrapper and have no business fucking up our hobby.

I've taken things like, a desk title plate from a military base or a piece of film strip from a movie theater. I know it's still technically removing an item from a location but I try to only take something small and worth putting in a scrap book or something. Most of what I've acquired came from the first visit. I don't scrap and I hope that's within the group's moral confines.

Some may seem the meager harvesting of gold as harmless but you miss out on the long-term the effect it has on a location when people keep getting caught with shit in their pockets.

Do you think that removing an unique item from a site degrades it for future explorers?
