Do you why was it abandoned?
I see this a lot in ghost towns.

I take it back, hawk - There was a burial in 1915, then the final one was 85 years later. Caroll Janz was buried there in 2000, at 70yrs of age. He (yes, he) was a Korean war vet.

No clue as to why it took so long to have another burial there, or if it is even an active cemetery. I have been able to locate history of some of the people buried there, but no history of the cemetery itself. The fact that there are hundreds of Zion Cemeteries, does not help!

It is possible that, while the cemetery might not be accepting new burials, he bought his plot at some point before it closed, for example his wife or parents may have been buried there. (Just a thought on that one) So they still put him in because his plot was already there.

I would say that is a great guess. I have seen many stones before that did not, as of yet, have the date of death. Those are presumably empty graves, and fit your explanation. Thanks!

These are from an abandoned cemetery now part of a National Wildlife Refuge. I think there are more people here than the number of stones would indicate. 1.

Not sure why Mandy's photograph came out so weird looking. It's actually pretty clear on the actual stone. You can still see what she looked like.

This stone was broken and lying on the ground last time I was here. Someone has taken the time to try to clean these up a lot.

Most of these stones were placed by the Royal Order of Friends of the World, an African-American fraternal insurance organization. The "Lily White" circle (No, I don't know why they called it that) was the local chapter.

Here ya go. I did not say the "p" word either, as I can't debunk some weird reflection on it. But at the same time I did not see anything that would cause a reflection like that either.

In the original photo it looks kind of like fire over her face.

I know nothing of the lady or her character in life, but I assume she probably didn't mind being photographed as her picture is on her headstone.

I don't remember seeing whatever it was. None of the other photos I took had splotches on them so I am assuming whatever it was, was not something on the camera lens. But it was out of doors in uncertain lighting and I was taking none of the precautions that your typical ghost hunter guys take - I was more interested in the tomb stones themselves than the fate of the occupants.

The cam sensor doesn't "see" what the human eye does so it's possible it picked up something that wasn't very noticeable to eye. I've seen this happen before; not necessarily super natural.
Still pretty cool

Woodland Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa.

The seemingly unused Block 13 is actually a Potter's Field and contains thousands of unmarked graves.

There are so many people buried there that the grave diggers refuse to dig there. No matter where they dug a new grave, they would always dig up bones.

St. James Cemetery, Richfield WI

This is the single greatest repair I have ever seen on a stone. I'd like to shake the hand of whomever did this.

This cemetery blew me away with all the 150+ year old tall, slim, sandstone memorials that WEREN'T broken and kicked over! I am guessing the lack of cover from passing traffic has something to do with it.

This is the mass grave in Peshtigo, WI. Often overlooked by the more "popular" Great Chicago Fire that occurred on the same day (Oct 8th 1871), the Great Peshtigo Fire is the single deadliest fire in American History. It claimed 1500 lives from a population of 1700. Chicago lost 300 lives. The surrounding area has reports of up to 2500 lives lost in total. Of those who survived, they did so by seeking refuge in the freezing Peshtigo River. Many of the death were from hypothermia as a result from the icy river. 1,200,00 acres of land burned. Chicago lost 2,100 acres. It burned with such veracity that it created a firestorm, with air being drawn into to oxygen hungry flames at a speed of up to 200mph. Flames burned at as much as 2,000F.

Yet another fire raged on the same day as well in Door County, just across Green Bay from Peshtigo. 128 people died in that fire. I do not know of Chicago (other than Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicking over the lantern is a myth), but the counties involved in the 2 fires here on that day had not seen rain since early July, 3 months prior.

There are the remains of 350 people in this grave. Most of whom could not be identified because there was no family left to identify them. I cannot even fathom what this must have been like to survive. Just a horrifying tale.

this cemetery in Antioch TN has a very interesting story behind it:
"Mr. Turner owned the land next to the interstate and when the big developers came in to built Hickory Hollow mall They wanted to build a exit just for the mall and then give it to the state and they did. It was the first one in the U.S. to be done this way so there was no rules to go by. Anyway since this was a private development there was no way for the state to condemn Mr. Turners land. This thing that was holding Mr. Turner back from selling the land was that his wife was buried there in a cemetery along with other family members and other good families besides his. It took quite a while but Good ole Mr. Turner won and they had to allow access to the cemetery from the interstate ramp; the only one of its kind that I know of."

You literally pull off to the inside while in the middle of an offramp and follow a path into the wooded area between the curving offramp to get to the cemetary. there is a geocache hidden here
