Kennesaw Dragstrip 2017: First Venture

Me and a couple of friends visited the old dragstrip near Kennesaw State University about two weeks ago. It was my first real UE outing, and it was pretty cool. We parked in a near-by parking lot around 9pm and walked on the sidewalk to the dragstrip in the dark. I found out about the location through UER and got my friends to join me on the expedition. The condition of the strip has deteriorated a lot since the last updates posted in 2009 on the Kennesaw Dragstrip location page. The pavement was more worn from erosion and the red and white road lining had faded significantly. Anyway, we walked along the entire strip. The forest around the worn out road had become dense and dark over the years, and we could hear nocturnal animals scampering about in the underbrush. Our flashlights weren't very strong, but enough to help us navigate. There was also a very bright LED billboard with a KSU advertisement up on a tall concrete tower which cast a pale glow over certain parts of the strip. The lights on I-75 helped too. We found a couple of big piles of shredded tires on the track at several points. After a large loop, we began looping back to the side of the track close to the road and came across a tall brick and concrete arch. The ladder on the arch was broken but my friend is an experienced rock-climber and he inspected the arch for a future climb when he brings his gear. After completing the loop once we talked for a while and hung out in the open area before the forested part of the strip before taking some final photos and heading back to the car around 11pm. It wasn't too eventful, but we had a good time and we plan on going again soon. It would be a fun to take some bikes or longboards and cruise on the strip at night with strong lights. Excuse some of the image quality, the photos I took aren't very good. My friend took some good ones which he can send to me to upload later in the thread. Also, as this is my first thread post, feel free to tell me how to improve my future posts or if I am breaking any rules. I would like to get more involved in UE and the UER community and visit more interesting places around my local area. 1.

Wow! This is really cool. I had no idea that there was an abandoned drag strip so close to my own stomping grounds. Would you say it is worth the trip? As a bit of a climber myself, I would be curious to hear how that future trip shakes out.

As to improving posts, I am pretty new here, so I don't have much advice except I have been told not to publicly mention specific location names so as to minimize vandal traffic. I don't know how public this strip already is, though.

Also, I don't think most audiences would get very much from the blurry photos. I tend to take a huge amount of photos when I go out so I can cherry pick what I feel are the most diverse and visually interesting shots to share.

One of the things I really enjoy about this forum is that it provides a place for me to share my pictures of wreckage and ruin with a group of people who might earnestly appreciate them. I don't feel like I get much of that from my usual social circles.

Welcome. Glad you're excited. You documented your explore in words very descriptively well.
Now delete all these stroked out potato photos. Except #9 for art's sake.

Nothing like the first time huh? ....exploring that is. What did you think I was talking about?

That adrenaline surge, your heart pounding in your throat as you tiptoe around a different world locked in time. Love that @@@@!

There are so many places around that area if you just drive around. Glad you found a place worth a second explore and had a good time. Share those other pics when you get a chance and like some others had said, maybe redact the logo and other identifying markers. I know exactly where you were talking about and I didn't know about it...... d'oh!! Luckily, I'm a middle aged woman and no danger. I don't even know how to open a spray can.

I go and do microbiological sampling and I would love to get a wild type sample grab of the organisms growing and decomposing those petroleum products. I want to crack them open and see what makes them tick. Others though....they just want to tag the shit up. Don't let them. Redact the logos and identifying marks and you are golden. Just my .02 and its worth half that.

Thanks for sharing.

They recently destroyed the other half that was south of the road. It had an interesting little bridge for the go kart track.
